My last job sounds like a scam when I think about it
- was a position that normally hinges on a portfolio of work. Never asked to see my portfolio. I forced them to look at it at the end of the interview.
- interview was over an hour long with meandering, weak questions
- no one ever contacted my references
- the boss contacted me via social media 2 weeks before I started to tell me what my first assignment would me. This one did raise a red flag for me, but I thought I was capable of setting and holding those boundaries (spoiler alert: I’m not!)
- there was no strategy, business plan, direction, or company structure
- the website advertised at least 2 things that didn’t exist, one of which sounded like a sports bar. The building did not have a liquor license
- the website also made it sound like the place was open and operational. It wasn’t. For six months after I was hired, and even then... only partially.
- In fact the building was in an active state of what I would refer to as “renovation-limbo": floor tiles completely ripped up, gutted in places, only half lit, no ceiling tiles through most of it, and decor choices in “bingo-hall-chic”
- the fire marshal only let it open to the public provisionally. Those provisions were continuously pushed back.
- the basement was full of 50 years of junk, black mold, and an entire section known as, I shit you not, “the destroyed section.”
- was obtained dirt cheap in a forced sale because the previous owner ran a weird scam out of it
- also previous owner showed up more than once to try to fight the current owner and/or steal back some of his shit
- also also previous owner hosted an “artist in residence” for a while who left parts of the building painted and littered with abandoned art projects that say, very loudly, “I was on LSD and/or shrooms when I made this”
- more people were fired from this place in my first 2 months than I had seen at all my previous jobs combined
- the owner insisted it was a museum. I countered that it was absolutely not a museum. He tried to fight me on this and get me to advertise our “museum.” I think my master’s degree might make me slightly more qualified to make this distinction. I refused.
Look, this post might make future potential employers hesitant to hire me, but I don’t care right now. I’m still processing this shit six months after leaving. It was legitimately traumatic. Working there left my self-confidence shattered, despite the frankly impressive things I accomplished.
I single handedly designed and oversaw the construction of an escape room and a big halloween event which opened on the same day.
Fuck all that, I’m pretty great.
