[Fanfic end of year asks.]
14. a fic you didn’t expect to write
“bind them on your hands” [archiveofourown.org/works/35469673], Galileo, Utsumi Kaoru & Yukawa Manabu, 2k words.
You see, I’d made myself a bingo card of various kinks, and as I explained on the notes of this story, I’m following two lines, one of which I want to be non-sexual, just as a challenge. I didn’t expect to write this one this year, because I’d been struggling to figure out how to approach “possession/marking” as something non-sexually explicit. I knew the simplest approach was to do something with writing on the body as the focus, but just couldn’t figure out how to plot that with writing Yukawa and Utsumi, until the obviousness of Yukawa’s tendency to write out equations hit me over the head. The simplest answer is always the most obvious, right? *headdesk*
Once I figured out that I could use the canon characterization to leap from, and the conceit of the explicit contract they make, I was able to write it all out this year, within a few months. Moreover, it’s completely gen. :D
Hashtag: making sense of Yukawa’s eureka moments since 2013, lol.
22. events you participated in this year
I seem not to have the concentration for writing events anymore, so only vidding events: VExercises and Festivids. Vexercises is a low-key vidding challenge with set exercises and I completed fourteen vids for it before the round soft-closed. Festivids is an annual rare fandom anonymous vidding exchange. This year vids will go live at the end of January and remain anonymous until revealed sometime in February. I was happy with my assignment and am just waiting for the go-live.
23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t
I can’t talk about this in detail, but I didn’t finish two that I wanted to this year: one with a party and one with a poly relationship. I had such plans for the first and there it sits, with the plot written out in small keynotes, and I haven’t touched it since August. The second, well, it’s been waiting for me to get it (them?) together for a few years. It can wait longer.
25. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read
I already made some recs this year, but I’ll add on this:
“Meet Me Halfway” by TozaBoma [archiveofourown.org/works/29737344], Secret Forest|Stranger, Han Yeo Jin/Hwang Si Mok, 44k words.
The fluffiest, tropiest, aro-ace take on how their relationship would develop past the events of the tv series. It made me delighted, stars-in-my-eyes besotted, with how it’s handled, with sweetness but not glurge, and a very good understanding of the characters.
