Forty-two police officers died via shootings in 2015, which is a 14 percent drop from 2014. Civilians on the other hand didn’t have it so good. Police killed more than 1,000 people in 2015 and already, three have been killed in 2016. Cop accountability was also hard hit last year. Less than 20 cops were indicted in 2015 for killing civilians. Sadder than that: that’s the largest number of cops charged for on duty killings since … forever.

When Cops Get Caught Sanitizing Or Flat-Out Lying About Brutality

What might appear improper to the average citizen is often found to be justified in the eyes of the law. (This story includes graphic videos.) Few aspects of policing attract more scrutiny than an officer's use of force. And as people around the nation continue to voice concerns about the sometimes contentious relationship between citizens and law enforcement, it's become clear that police and the policed often have drastically different interpretations of the same incidents. In some cases, this disagreement may stem from an honest difference of opinion. Police violence -- and violence in general -- typically looks repulsive, whether you're watching it unfold in person or on video. It regularly leads to questions about whether a situation truly called for the level of force used, and whether anyone's civil rights were violated in the process. But when the question of what's "excessive" is left to an internal review process that tends to give officers a great deal of leeway, what might appear improper to the average citizen is often found to be justified in the eyes of the law.

One by one, five police officers took the witness stand at the Skokie courthouse late last month for what would typically be a routine hearing on whether evidence in a drug case was properly obtained.

But in a “Perry Mason” moment rarely seen inside an actual courtroom, the inquiry took a surprising turn when the suspect’s lawyer played a police video that contradicted the sworn testimony of the five officers — three from Chicago and two from Glenview, a furious judge found.

Cook County Circuit Judge Catherine Haberkorn suppressed the search and arrest, leading prosecutors to quickly dismiss the felony charges. All five officers were later stripped of their police powers and put on desk duty pending internal investigations. And the state’s attorney’s office is looking into possible criminal violations, according to spokeswoman Sally Daly.

“Obviously, this is very outrageous conduct,” a transcript of the March 31 hearing quoted the judge, a former county prosecutor, as saying. “All officers lied on the stand today. … All their testimony was a lie. So there’s strong evidence it was conspiracy to lie in this case, for everyone to come up with the same lie. … Many, many, many, many times they all lied.”

In 2011, hundreds of drug cases were dismissed after several police officers were accused of mishandling evidence. That year, Justice Gustin L. Reichbach of the State Supreme Court in Brooklyn condemned a widespread culture of lying and corruption in the department’s drug enforcement units. “I thought I was not naïve,” he said when announcing a guilty verdict involving a police detective who had planted crack cocaine on a pair of suspects. “But even this court was shocked, not only by the seeming pervasive scope of misconduct but even more distressingly by the seeming casualness by which such conduct is employed.”

Deputy told prosecutors he was checking the gunsight A San Mateo County deputy sheriff accused of pointing a gun at a custodian in a Redwood City courtroom in April explained to investigators that he did have his gun out of its holster, but that he was checking the gunsight, prosecutors said. Deputy Andy Mar, 50, is facing a charge of misdemeanor brandishing of a firearm, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Prosecutors filed the charge on May 7 and arraignment is set for Friday, May 22, at 8:30 a.m. in Redwood City Misdemeanor Court.
