The Prize
FADE IN:
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
A group of students wait outside a building. We focus on a nervous 17-year-old black girl named KIM who stands out among the crowd with her academic regalia. Her mother, THERESA, a proud black woman, looks on from the side.
THERESA You got this, baby girl.
Kim nods and takes a deep breath.
KIM I know, mom. I’m ready.
INT. AUDITORIUM - DAY
Kim is sitting in the audience among other students waiting for the ceremony to start. She fidgets nervously with her gown, her eyes scanning the room.
Suddenly, the announcer's voice booms over the microphone.
ANNOUNCER (V.O) Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here today to honor the achievements of our graduating class. It is my pleasure to announce this year’s recipient of the Outstanding Student Award.
Kim’s heart races as she looks around at her classmates, all of them equally deserving.
ANNOUNCER (V.O) The winner is Kimberly Johnson.
Kim’s eyes widen in shock as she hears her name called. She stands up slowly, still in disbelief.
Kim makes her way to the stage, the applause of her peers ringing in her ears. The principal hands her a certificate and a trophy.
PRINCIPAL Kimberly, congratulations. You’ve made us all proud.
Kim takes the award, her eyes glistening with tears of joy.
KIM Thank you, sir. I’m so grateful for this.
She looks out into the audience and spots her mother, who is beaming with pride.
Kim gives her mother a nod and smile, signaling her appreciation.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
Kim exits the building, holding her award close to her chest. Her friends congratulate her and snap pictures.
Kim sees her mother waiting outside, who rushes over to embrace her.
THERESA I knew you could do it, baby girl. I’m so proud of you.
Kim hugs her mother tightly, grateful for her unwavering support.
