Anti-abortion MPs are coordinating their attacks on hard-won reproductive healthcare rights in three states. Pip Hinman reports.
Labor still gives its MPs a conscience vote — meaning it still does not take a principled stand on this health procedure. SA Abortion Action Coalition co-convenor Brigid Coombe told the ABC on May 20: “Understanding the importance of ensuring that anyone who needs an abortion can get one when they need it and the circumstances that they’re in, are the circumstances that should inform the care that’s provided.” Meanwhile, NSW Libertarian MP John Ruddick wants to criminalise doctors with fines of up to $22,000 and five years prison under the guise of stopping “sex selective abortions” in his Abortion Law Reform Amendment (Sex Selection Prohibition) Bill 2025. Greens MLC Amanda Cohn, who is also a GP, said there is little evidence that sex-selective abortion — terminating a pregnancy because of the sex of the foetus — actually occurs. “The suggestion that it is being sought by women from particular ethnic and cultural backgrounds is fed by racist and anti-immigration rhetoric”. PHON’s Barnaby Joyce will speak at an anti-abortion rally, being supported by Family Voice Australia, on June 2 in support of Ruddick’s bill, which will be debated the next day. Pro-choice advocates are rallying at 6pm at Parliament House the same day.
Right-wing pricks starting up their bigotry again - not to mention the transphobia they've also spouted lately, along with their usual racist & xenophobic drivel.

awww the like button turns into a rainbow when you press it! that's so cute...hey staff what's with all the trans women you keep nuking?
i think we should be ridiculing them more for this. you don't get to try and go all "queer website" when your staff likes to go on nuking sprees targeting the trans fem users
promeo!!
Russell T Davies stating that his transphobic friends aren't so bad irl and they don't attack him so why can't we all just accept everyone has different views................... Hey Russell, they are taking my rights away. They aren't being aggressive with YOU because you're NOT TRANS. How can you genuinely not see how ridiculous your statement is?????
You can get away with just letting out a 'sigh' and 'putting up with each other' because it's not your very right to exist that's in question!
How fucking quickly a guy who fought his way up through a homophobic industry is willing to kick the ladder out from under him and refuse to stand up for those more vulnerable than him.
It repulses me.
There is MUCH to criticise about the state of modern discourse, but do not have the arrogance to tell us that we should just 'put up with' the fact that some people want to see us fucking dead. They want us excluded from public existence. They want control over our bodies.
Can you use your platform and influence to stand up for us rather than giving us hollow and ill-conceived tokenised representation while going out to the pub with people who want us eradicated from public life.
Have some principles!
This is at the same time that transphobia is getting worse in the Uk btw and more anti-trans laws are being passed (like the bathroom ruling which is absolute bullshit)

Deep frustration with the budget has led more than 400 scientists, young people, Indigenous leaders, and conservation experts to write collectively to the Prime Minister and Treasurer, pleading for adequate funding to stop rapid nature loss. They argue the budget was a big backward step on the only intergenerational issue actually recognised in Australian laws, the need for the current generation to maintain the health of the environment for the benefit of future generations. It also fails to honour pledges by the Labor government to end neglect of the environment and prevent new extinctions. The group includes 58 young people and 106 professors, 200 people with PhDs, and has been backed by many of Australia’s peak professional scientific bodies, conservation organisation CEOs, and Landcare groups. Budget analysis by the Biodiversity Council found only 0.06%, or $1 in every $1667 of Government spending, will go to on-ground land and ocean conservation, for activities like weed, pest animal and fire management, coast, reef and bushland restoration and threatened species conservation led by Indigenous Rangers, Landcare and regional groups. This is a reduction from this year’s already low spend, and future years have even less allocated, with the commitment in 2028-29 almost half of this year’s spend in real terms after accounting for inflation. The group are calling for 1% of the federal budget to be invested in long-term on-ground conservation programs. This is the amount scientists have estimated is needed to halt rapid nature loss, prevent extinctions and start recovering degraded areas.
Labor loves strip-mining Australia for parts and fossil fuels and at this point, there's no discernment between them and the LNP on this.

Australia’s complicity in Israel’s atrocities has many ugly layers. It’s worse than the bomb release mechanism on the F-35 death plane. It’s worse than the intelligence gathered at Pine Gap on behalf of a violent supremacist empire. It’s worse than the fascistic assaults on Pro-Palestine speech and protest. It’s not just the relentless propaganda disguised as news, our sellout politicians, or the cultural witch hunts of the Zionist lobby and its commissar, the Special Envoy for ruining writers’ festivals. It is, somehow, even shittier than all of that. Australia is manufacturing the raw explosive that ends up inside the bombs falling on Gaza, on Lebanon, and on Iran. Not the entirety of the bombs. Just the explosive bits. And even Penny Wong wouldn’t have the gall to argue that nitroglycerin, nitrocellulose, and RDX (known as cyclonite) are the “non-lethal parts” of a bomb. Two factories, one in NSW, at Mulwala, and one in Victoria, in Benalla, manufacture the munitions that end up inside the shells, bullets, missiles and bombs used by the US-Israeli death machine in its expansionist, genocidal campaigns. “The Australian government knows where the munitions end up. They end up in Israel,” a source inside the global arms supply chain told The Shot under condition of anonymity.
Aus government making us complicit in genocide, part 1 billion.
