tips for dealing with the cold from a canadian who lives in an old ass house and has to deal with -30c with paper tin walls:
-electric space heaters are your best friends these things will heat up a room like crazy
-don’t be afraid to sleep in several layers of winter outwear, that’s what we do when electricity dies during snow storm
-about clothing, have an under layer. pantyhose and skin tight tank top, under a skin tight long sleeve, under your actual clothing, and make sure there’s no gap between them. keeping a layer of clothing flush with your body will keep the cold from getting to your skin directly
-if you have to go outside, don’t put like four pairs of socks in your boots. it might be warm at the beginning but your feet are gonna loose blood circulation and that’s a real danger, plus you’re gonna be cold anyway
-never leave your ears uncovered outside it’s gonna hurt like a motherfucker for a while
-i cannot stress this enough, put thick blankets (layers of em) in your doors and windows. down here we spend the entire winter with picnic blankets nailed to our doors. you can also put window plastic in the windows but i don’t know if there’s some of that in greece or texas.
-if the sun hits a window directly, let it enter your house
-socks and blankets on your pets, especially smaller ones. full disclosure i don’t know if putting socks on pets is a good thing but we always do it and my cat’s 14 and kicking
-layer your clothing
-think about the homeless. hundreds of them die each winter where i live and it’s a real tragedy. distribute blankets and warm drinks, warm hats (once again, ears), socks any coats you don’t have any use for. imagine living though those storms you’ve been getting from a park bench.
good luck, remember the cold can cause serious long term damage (frost bite stays), and don’t be shy to dm me if you have any questions, i might have forgotten some stuff
To my friends in Texas, if you can see this know that I’m thinking and worried about you and hoping that the storm will end soon.
Please stay safe. 🖤
I’m really kinda tired of reading “stop feeling bad for Texas, they asked for it, they voted for these politicians who screwed them over and put them in this position!” Because yes, a lot of them did do this to themselves by voting incompetent people in, but also a lot of people voted against those in office right now. And a LOT of people living in Texas right now couldn’t even vote at all. Between voter discrimination/restriction, and all of the immigrants who can’t vote either (especially many from Latin American countries), there are so many people who are suffering and don’t get even the opportunity for a say in what happens.
And you know who are really suffering the most right now through this storm? Immigrants, minorities, low income families who probably didn’t choose this. So please stop saying Texas deserves it. The politicians who truly fucked them over are going to come out the other end of this crisis just fine like they always do.
sending love to the 90% of texas that’s still dealing with blackouts and freezing temperatures. i hope you and your families are warm, and that your electricity and heat work again soon. you shouldn’t be in this situation and i’m sorry you are. stay safe, please.

If you are a disabled person impacted by the extreme cold and power outages in TEXAS or OKLAHOMA, you can reach out to the Partnership For Inclusive Strategies for help and support.

If you’re in a position to do so, you can donate HERE.
Please reblog this. Disabled people suffer and die at an incredibly disproportionate rate during disasters because of ableist response policies that refuse to take our needs into account. This is an invaluable resource and it needs to be shared, especially now.

staying warm tips from backpacking/camping and living in new england
for anyone still without power or heat:
Keeping your bladder empty helps you keep warm. If you have to pee, then your body spends all that energy to keep your pee at the internal temperature that your body wants to be at, but if you empty your bladder, that energy can be spent keeping the rest of your body warm. GO PEE.
Wear something other than cotton for your base layers against your skin. If you’re wearing cotton and it gets even a little sweaty, it will be clammy and cold for the rest of time. Synthetics or wool are great options, a lot of athletic wear will fir this bill, look at the tag for material info and make sure that your base layers have NO cotton (other than underwear, underwear is fine, although try for a non cotton bra). AVOID COTTON.
“But why will i get sweaty if im this cold?” because you need to be moving around. Not anything strenuous, im not telling you to take up p90x, but its amazing what a few crunches will do. Do like 10 crunches, some push ups, some tricep dips, jumping jacks. This is not about getting shredded, its about circulating your blood. EXCERCISE.
Any clothes that you’re not wearing: stuff them in your bed under the covers around you while youre sleeping. a bunch of tshirts and a few sweatshirts will trap heat better around you this way than if you try to put them all on. As a bonus, in the morning, you get to put on a sweatshirt that has all your sleeping heat already in it. USE CLOTHES THAT YOU AREN’T WEARING.
And lastly: socks. ive seen some stuff going around about layering socks and that is fantastic, yes, do that. But also make sure that your socks are staying dry. I’d say change your socks when you wake up, and before you go to sleep. They dont have to be clean, but just dry. Bonus pro tip: any socks that you’re not wearing, keep them under your shirt across your belly. Its not flattering, but it keeps your socks warm so you wont be putting on cold socks and helps dry them if they’re at all sweaty. CHANGE YOUR SOCKS.
