Front and Back of The Internet: IRL ( I was born in the year 2000), 2019, a 1999 Hasbro Furby, teddy bear spine, my mom’s decapitated Beanie Baby collection, screen prints of childhood movies and games, assorted furs and fabrics, stuffing, beads, sequins, gems, embroidered Lisa Frank inspired appliques, glitter, acrylic paint, and jewelry from elementary and middle school. 5 ft, 4 in x 1 ft
Hello everyone! This past week our team dyed the Adire and yarns we have been preparing over the last month. All the hours of tying and stitching culminated with us dyeing using indigo and Guinea Corn leaves (Oka Baba). We were blessed with perfect weather and some beautifully dyed Items that will be incorporated into the final installation. The pieces incorporated dyeing techniques from all over west Africa including “Adire Alabere” (stitch resist) techniques from Nigeria. “Gara” kola nut and Indigo over dyeing techniques from Gambia and Sierra Leone and over dyed tie and dye handwoven textiles drawn from Dyula and Baule textiles from the Ivory coast. Stay tuned as our project continues to develop!

The Internet IRL (I was born in the year 2000) is the physical manifestation of my experience growing up in the 2000s as a young girl exploring her femininity virtually and in reality. The fusion of a 1999 Hasbro Furby with representations of my adolescence such as Beanie Babies, Disney Channel original movies, and Pokémon cards, resulted in a Lisa Frank, maximalist fever dream. This piece fulfills a childhood desire for a creative process undisturbed from patriarchal pressures while simultaneously embraced by the nostalgic aesthetic of internet culture. The “long furby” was born and continues to live on the internet for the same reason little girls explore extravagant interests in femininity: pleasure. For women to authentically and joyfully exist in any manner, regardless of gendered expression, is a direct threat to the patriarchy. The Internet IRL (I was born in the year 2000) celebrates the type of kaleidoscopic femininity often repressed into girlhood memory due to sexist humiliation.

I've been having fun making small textile collage landscapes, putting to use some of the bits and pieces I've garnered over the years - mainly from op shops/thrift stores. The "bits" include a box of assorted reels of thread in a variety of colours. It will take a lot of 15cm square landscapes to make a dent in my supplies. But I'm working on it...😏 #landscape #textilecollage #texileart #machineembroidery #recycling #thrifting #upcycle #wastenot #vintagetextiles #salvos #rainyday (at Moyston, Victoria, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRYUIhnrRkg/?utm_medium=tumblr
Stitch drawings of animals. I use a domestic machine and hand sewing. Where possible I use natural fibres like linen which are reclaimed. I use 100% wool felt and silk remnants. #texileart #hareart #owlart #hare I am on Etsy see my bio https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo1JcMTFHtC/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=msnf3u9vwt21
