THE WORM AT THE CORE, curated by @joshuachiet, opened last night at @culturelablic - I feel so fortunate to be included in this exhibition alongside @skeletonkeyerik, @reedadamchristopher, @rivers6727, and @elisabethsmolarz. Thanks to the @culturelablic folks for being so kind and welcoming. The exhibition will be on view until April 24th. . I'm still working with forms from the figures in my last post, He Never Came Back, the pared down creature, the black sheep as I sometimes call it. I made these two figures in the last year, starting them at the beginning of the pandemic. The figures have become more abstract, pushing towards abstraction. These are covered in obsessive marking, stitching and thousands of buttons. The second and third photos are close-ups of the surface texture. These were made for a museum show that was cancelled, which is fitting as they were made about the reaction I witnessed to people who may have been unwitting vectors, and the pandemic led to the cancellation. FLUID is an exploration of gender and sex. Creating a relationship between what's seen as male and feminizing it. An attempt in questioning societal views on gender. This idea of having to follow these gender roles giving to you because of your genitalia is absurd, I wanted to create a narrative that questioned gender, probing the boundary between man and woman. Opening up the discussion of gender fluidity. Fiber work is often seen as feminine craft, and I wanted to use that by crafting something is usually hyper-masculine.. the male genitals.
