here are some illustrations i did over the course of a month and a half for an educational curriculum company in downtown Manhattan. basically a dream job where i went into work every day and drew. because they were accompanying a bunch of children's stories on a variety of subjects for an English-learning program, i pretty much had full reign to experiment with different styles. these were the results...
i have to say it was a bit of a challenge to get my characters to be more kid-friendly/cartoony. i still lean more towards a realistic style with a natural color palette, so i'm glad my first story was a Native American folktale.
this was for a story about a kid who couldn't find his dog. it's my Disney moment.
this was for another Native American tale. i was trying out a lithographic/scratchboard look:
for an article about kelp ecosystems:
made me miss Monterey and the aquarium! i had the animals on a separate layer so they could move around to accomodate the layout text.
sadly, some were cut (sorry guys).
for a journal entry about a girl visiting the La Brea Tar Pits and wanting to be a paleontologist like Hildegarde Howard:
this was a lot of fun, as i got to draw like an 8 year old with crayons.
this was an infographic on language. i tried to channel my inner Quentin Blake.
sometimes i got an assignment to try and copy the style of "bad" art, so we could extend a story. this was about the human body. i did the the pieces on the right:
this was a collaboration with another graphic artist for a map about the Navajo Nation:
this was for a story on an immigrant Bulgarian family:
this was for a cautionary tale about frogs as mosquito control and why humans shouldn't always intervene with nature:
some vector illustrations about British Parliament:
and lastly, probably one of my favorite assignments:
i was asked to edit pre-existing art that was deemed slightly offensive. for the record, yes depicting Asians with severe slanty eyes is a bit offensive!
in this case i was happy to make changes that more accurately reflect what i see in real life!
