They finally put their fears to sleep,
Out with those tears,
Let them fall,
Weep!
Let those tears erase and sweep,
The planes of tension, worry, anxiety,
Sadness, etched so far, so deep.
Put your hesitation away,
I know trusting doesn’t come easily to you,
I know the last time you gambled with it,
All you remember is the heartache,
The anger and bitter aftertaste of regret.
We weren’t built for simplicity,
You and I.
We’ve always been the epitome of complexity.
It’s what gives us purpose,
It’s what keeps our very hearts still beating,
Despite the hurt, abuse, brickbats and criticism,
Thrown our way.
Don’t despair,
You’re not alone, never alone,
On this journey,
Of destinations, dreams and goals.
We’re all in a state of disarray and repair,
Impaired, flawed,
Imperfect, misshapen,
Missing pieces,
Filled with gaping voids.
We were born to be a thriving collective,
To fill each other’s voids, gaps and spaces,
You and I were born to be a we.
Somehow somewhere down the line,
We drew our lines, our boundaries,
Sought out separation, division and isolation,
Stomped on the weak and helpless,
Drew pleasure in spreading misery,
To those unable to stand up to injustice and intolerance,
We called them victims,
Packaged them as survivors,
Picked and chose perpetrators,
Based on their disposability,
Versus the nature of their despicability.
We call for unity in times of crisis,
When it’s our differences that are highlighted,
Under that term we know as diversity.
We are walking, talking calamities,
Searching for a reprieve,
We just need to remember,
Despite all the constant reminders,
Nailed into our heads;
That,
We aren’t defined by our difficulties,
Our challenges or adversities.
We aren’t defined by our 9-5’s,
Retirement plans, pensions or cushy lifestyles.
We are defined by that which frees us,
That which lets our minds, hearts and souls grow.
That which breaks the barriers,
That keeps you away from me.
