I have a theory (one may even say a game theory /silly ref) about The Freak Circus and how the MC relates to the angel featured in Harlequin’s story.

Specifically, I think the MC is the angel (specifically perhaps a reincarnation?). I propose that we have some information that points in that direction and after forcing @tazz-was-here to listen to my chaotic thoughts I figured it was only fair to do the same to everyone here

So buckle up boys we're going for a journey

(I also like to preface this is 50% fun and 50% funny, though it would be neat if I was in the right direction :3c)

Lets start with the basics. We know that Neko has taken some inspiration from the Commedia dell'arte. And what is the Commedia dell'arte?

Commedia dell'arte was an early form of professional theatre, originating from Italian theatre, that was popular throughout Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries. [...] Commedia is characterized by masked "types" which are standardised archetypical characters shared across all productions and identified via their names, costumes, and functions in the comedy.

These standardized or 'stock' characters would be used in performances and works much like we treat characters in fandom today: like barbie dolls in the dramatic stage of storytelling with a per-existing background and personality we can mush around and remix depending on the story being told.

So enter our characters Pierrot and Harlequin, two stock characters featured in the Commedia dell'arte. Pierrot's role is often silent in modern-ish interpretations, and he has often shown to be pining for a woman named Colombina. In traditional Commedia dell'arte Colombina is instead in love with Harlequin, who also loves her in turn and competes with Pierrot with his wit against Pierrot's passive melancholy.

With this in mind, we can understand a bit more how Neko explains he's making his own twist on it:

So in my scenario, in the past of these two Pierrot also loved Colombina, and Harlequin seduced her for the pleasure of seeing Pierrot lose. But something tragic happened in this love triangle. Now Colombina no longer exists, Pierrot falls in love with you (the player) and becomes obsessed. He has already lost a love once and wants yours! In any case, but Harlequin wants to play this game. So the player will basically play the role of Colombina!

(I am assuming due to the chaos of the English language that was meant to be 'Colombina also loved Pierrot' but someone correct me if that assumption is wrong!)

So we're 'playing' the role of Colombina, huh? Certainly sounds like a thematic parallel.. OR could that have been more literal than we assumed?

In reference to if we'll get more Colombina in the future, Neko said: "She is part of the stage, and we cannot forget that."

Though I could argue this means she (as us the player) is still with the circus-- or that we've found our way back to the circus-- Neko more than likely is referring to the flashes and glitches we get during Harlequin's performance, since we DO see flashes of a woman who is presumably Colombina, to put it lightly, getting snacked on.

Me slowly realizing that my theory is holding less and less water but I will live on in denial.

However, I have more evidence. When asked why Pierrot fell in love with the MC so suddenly, he answered: "The angel's death has to do with how Pierrot becomes obsessed with MC"

What a peculiar thing...

Could that be because when Pierrot sees the MC as we are defending him, he sees us as the reincarnation of his old love? Possibly, but unfortunately this evidence is debunked since he sees us in the Bad End we very quickly turn into a human-shaped McDonalds order.

Goddamnit Pierrot you're ruining my perfectly baseless theory here.

Edit: It has been affirmed to me that this point COULD still hold up, since the way Pierrot sees you when you defend him is a very different context than this scene above. Neko has said this in regards to how Pierrot loves the MC:

"Pierrot will fall for the player regardless of gender or physical type. drawn to the soul, not the shape."

Granted, that could be entirely unrelated to the angel because Pierrot is a sweet pansexual dork, but also.... could it be a hint?

No. But maybe? But probably not. BUT MAYBE--

Well, there IS the scene where, upon rejecting Pierrot's request to see him again he makes a very clear statement that connects the MC and the Angel/Colombina:

Get yourself a man who looks at you like that (minus the cannibalism part that could be a red flag)

...Now, I guess TECHNICALLY, if the MC was the reincarnation of the Angel, then his wording would have made more sense to be 'Don't make me devour you AGAIN', since 'too' insinuates a separation of person, that there was a previous one he consumed like a Taco Bell burrito and the MC is someone else entirely.

I think I'm too hungry to be making these analogies...

I think we can make some broad assumptions that, if PERHAPS the MC is not a reincarnation with Colombina, then the two of them are connected in some *makes hand gestures* kinda way-- especially since I imagine that is tied to why Harlequin and Pierrot are so at ends with one another-- and why Harlequin seems to start pulling out all the moves ONLY when he knows Pierrot has shown interest in them with the red ticket.

Okay I'm not going to lie, I didn't expect to get this far and if you're still with me then you're a brave soul and I respect your perseverance.

The beginning.

Before in the past. A long.. long time ago, Ringmaster was quite close to Ticket taker, the two of them were attached to the hip. All of them, had quite the strong bonds actually.. well. That was before they soon came to their falling point.. when they met a man. A human man. Promising them a feast, food to contently fill their stomachs with in return for their entertainment.. their loyalty. In which.. they complied. Yet considering Ticket taker and the Ringmaster were the only ones left with family by their sides? they practically clung to each other like glue. Because unlike the others, they had the ungodly privilege of having their other twin next by them.

Yet suddenly tension began to grow between Pierrot and Harlequin , both trying to achieve the same goal.. To earn Columbina’s affection.

But it all came to a halt. the angels last breath. Starved and desperate , they resorted to cannibalism. And the weakest among them? Little ol’ Columbina.. No one was proud of it. But it was a must.. they were hungry , STARVED. No one could take it anymore. in their hungered trance as they scoffed down the tense muscles of flesh down their throats..

Yet Ringmaster seeing her friend? No. Her companion? One who she held dear to her lay on this cold floor lifeless? Ringmaster remained frozen. Unable to move. Kneeling weakly next to Columbina’s unrecognisable body. (Ironic Isn’t it?) And in that state of shock.. It was broken by a choked gag. A violent gag. Only to find Ticket taker, glaring down with gut those wrenchingly focused eyes, forcibly shoving a hunk of tensed up muscles into her mouth. Why?

Because even through his hunger ,his secondary focus was his sister. And family was family. And despite Ringmaster feeling as if she was about to puke her guts out? Feeling as if she had just been betrayed in the worst way possible? Her body reacted first before her mind could.

Hurriedly joining the rest as she messily shovelled balls of meat hand by hand into her mouth. Scoffing down whatever flesh there was remaining alongside the rest.. and even as much as she tried telling herself this wasn’t her own doing , that this was just her body reacting out of pure desperation and hunger-.. that she would never willingly choose to do this.. that small part of her conscious knew damn well this wasn’t about will-power.. it was about hunger. Cause if she really didn’t want to? She would be doing everything in her power to stop her body from doing this. To hold her instincts back.

Yet she didn’t.

the freak circus x land of the lustrous au

"WHAT DO I WEAR?!" you yelled throwing out dresses and shirts and whatever clothing you have out of your wardrobe that either landed on the floor your chair and bed.

why were you panicking? your going to hang out with pierrot that isn't the circus so you had to look your best!

"you should really calm down you know" angel voice came from the corner of the room avoiding the clothing attack, she was another gem who came by to help you as you requested their help for this.

"BUT I HAVE NO TIME!" you yelled from within the wardrobe

"you have like 2 hours to get ready thats enough"

"IT'S NOT FOR ME! I'M DOOMED! THIS HANGOUT IS GONNA BE A FAILURE!!!!" You slumped down legs dangling out of the wardrobe as Angel picks you up with ease and sets you down on a chair, moving the clothes out of the way

"Let's get you deciding on what colour hair you want in"

"pink! no blue! um green! no wai-" angel covered your mouth

"okay thats enough, your gonna have a pontytail it fit well with your long hair but why add color to it?"

"My hair is grey like smoke sure there's some white bits but it only shows well in the dark, plus iv heard people calling me an oldy" You hung your head low remembering that.

angel "i mean...we are gems? arnt we already older then humans?"

you shot a glare and angel giggled "okay I'll stop"

angel took out strands of yellow and orange hair that was carved from gemstone, carving hair from gemstone is really hard especially on the type of gem but angel was a natural at it.

"these will do it be like a lighting your hair is like a thunder cloud and these colours will bring out more better" angel explained

"thats not a bad idea actually at least I won't look like an old person"

"oh? but im old too, older than you"

"yeah but your a diamond! your hardness of ten! you dont need to worry about anything!"

"oh hush, so whos the lucky guy your gonna hang out with?"

"his name is pierrot, hes a jester? clown? he works in the freak circus with the rest"

angel stopped for a second "the freak circus?"

"yeah, you heard of it?"

"yeah...iv heard of it, pretty sceary isn't it?"

"oh yeah they make it so sceary though i still wounder whats in the pink tent"

"probably some boxes and equipment to keep in there"

"yeah I guess your right"

Soon you decided to wear a white dress with heel shoes and your hair was tied in a ponytail the strands of Heliodor and zircon put in adding some colour to it.

"i love it!, thanks angel!" you happily jumped hugging angel.

Angel chulked and petted your head "No problem now go get him, tiger"

Near the park, Pierrot waited for you, and when he heard your voice, he turned to you, smiling at you. You were beautiful.

"Hey Pierrot sorry if I'm late had to look great for our hangout!"

Pierrot smiled "You look lovely my dear~" he whispered making you giggle "You look amazing as always Pierrot i like your outfit, the hoodie, the mask, it's definitely a surprise to see you out of the circus outfit"

"well if I go out in my work outfit I will just draw more attention on myself" he whispered

"True I'm glad that Jester allowed you to have the day off to hang out with me, now let's go!"

the two headed to the location you picked, an arcade! The sounds of people laughing and talking filled the air, you pulled out your arcade card, you had been here before so you already got a few tokens on your card.

"so pierrot what game do you wanna start first?"

Pierrot looked around and pointed to a crane game, you told him how it works, and swiped your card to play, pierrot moved the claw and it managed to pick up the plushy...only for it to drop when it was brought fully to the top.

You patted Pierrot's shoulder as he looked a little sad "yeah thats how they get ya, im pretty sure its rigged" you looked around and spotted a shooting arcade machine and your eyes light up. "hey lets try this" you dragged pierrot to the machine picking up the toy gun. "all we gotta do is try and survive for as long as we can, you ready?"

pierrot picked up the modle gun "like this?"

You nodded "Yep just like that!" the game started it was a classic zombie shooter and it was the abandoned office building.

supringly you and Pierrot got pretty far in the game characters walked through a door a zombie popped out causing the characters to scream in surprise even Pierrot jumped a little you could have sworn you heard a little pep sound.

you couldn't help but smiled 'how cute'

You two fought the boss now and it was not kidding being difficult, mostly to get the players to use more money on revives but the boss soon went down and you smiled happily before jumping up and hugging Pierrot "We did it! Good job!" You giggled as Pierrot smiled blushing having you so close to him was amazing.

pierrot noticed the yellow tickets and grabs them

"Didn't know they give out tickets from this machine, let's play and have fun and we use the tickets for Something afterwards"

And so you two had fun playing on the different games and such and managed to get quite a lot of tickets turns out, Pierrot was really good at ski-ball.

You two went up to the counter and had a look and spotted two monster dog plush keychains, one that had three eyes and one that had 4 eyes, you got the 4 eyed dog and pierrot got the three eyed one.

you giggled feeling the plush dog keychain "its so soft and fluffy its so goofy I love it!"

Pierrot nodded feeling his keychain as well the two of you stopped hearing a growl not from a dog or anything from Pierrot.

Pierrot looked away embarrassed his face was a little flustered he was hungry, you chulked seeing him act like that "Let's get you something to eat, You two exited the arcade and headed to a nearby bakery and got Pierrot a sandwich there was the arcade pizza though it tasted like shit.

You handed pierrot the sandwich and he thanked you and began to eat it but half way eating he stopped looking you, and you knew why "oh dont worry pierrot im not hungry though im glad your enjoying your food, your little blush was cute" you said and you froze saying that and pierrot chulked as well and leaned in whispering into your ear "your cute too my dear~"

The two of you headed back to the train to get back home during the train ride you fell asleep against pierrot shoulder, oh how he wishes he could take you now, but he will be patient for you, as he picks you up, he walked down the empty streets of the city, he waa getting close to your house and was debating right there and now if he should take you back to the circus to keep you there forever but angel stood in his way.

"Ah you must be Pierrot thank you for bringing them back, I'm their friend Angel" Angel shows a picture of her and you on her phone to prove to pierrot that she wasn't lying.

Pierrot sighed and let angel take you away it was almost a shame but it was probably for the best, he dosent want to ruining that moment and because angel was there.

angel closed the door behind her and locked it, putting you in bed, making sure the balcony was locked too.

Angel looks down at yourself sleeping form "i won't let them devour you"

I had fun imaging her costume if she had lived :D I think her act would be the giant hoop and/or tightrope acrobatics

so I've got some ideas for the the freak circus x land of the lustrous au with pierrot x gem reader

Depending on the vote it will go and do that one

so far the one im working on, the gem body, is one with the gem reader showing doctor more about gem biology.

Green mischief (harlequin begins to question if the reader is even human and so keeps an eye on them)

Hang out date (gem reader invites pierrot to hang out on his day off and asks a friend of theirs to do their hair to look good for the hangout)

old memories (Pierrot shows Gem Reader around the circus getting to know everyone a little bit better and Gem Reader has an old memory seeing jester)

the pole will end in 1 week
