ugh i adore tgwatg, like to this day i feel those like three chapters are some of the best writing ive done and i think it would be the best story, but there is a bit of me that is like, maybe this would be better og fiction than fanfic?

so idk what i'm going to do with it, but one way or another im gonna go back to that story for sure!

after having seen the girl with all the gifts twice, i'm reading the book finally, and i just have to say. why did they take the wildflower scene out? that scene alone encapsulates the major details of the book up to that point. miss justineau's kindness & willingness to go the extra step for the children, but more importantly, the extent to which the children have been deprived of the natural world. the way they know it's the vernal equinox, but not what spring is. melanie not knowing what a branch is. the brilliant shades of color of the flowers that contrast with the concrete-and-metal world they live in. that bit especially would've been a fantastic visual cue, going from scenery with mostly dull colors to the wildflowers. and the significance of unlocking the children's hands so they can touch the flowers... that would've made for excellent imagery, imo.

also the sentences, "There's lots of wild flowers there, and even a few trees. So I went over there, and I just grabbed what I could find. Would have felt like vandalism, before the Breakdown, but the wild flowers are doing okay for themselves these days."

I feel like that bit in italics really fits in neatly with the ending of the narrative, how the fungus takes over in the end & melanie says something along the lines of it being her turn to inherit the world. it's the wildflower's world now just as much as it is the fungus's. that + a pan to a field of wildflowers or even jars of wildflowers put near the mobile lab would've tied up the thematic imagery nicely. to be fair, i'm not sure if the book does the ending differently, but this feel like a poor choice to leave this scene out.
