Yuyan hadn’t slept. Last night had been miserable-- one mistake after another, all culminating in a less than favourable outcome. Sure, she had gotten the information she had been sent for in the end, but it had been more messy than she liked and she had the bruises to show for it. So, after dealing with the fallout of it all, she had set off for a run. Usually she just went to the gym, but when she needed to clear her head, nothing worked like a long jog through the less-populated areas of the island.
Especially when it was this early and there was no one else around, she could just let her mind drift and not really pay attention to anything at all.
Or maybe that was not such a great idea, because just as she was rounding a bend on a particularly secluded road, she found herself colliding with something solid and human shaped. And when she looked up, the solid human-shaped guy didn’t look too happy about it. Someone hadn’t had their morning coffee, she could only assume.
“Oh, I’m sorry about that! I guess I got distracted. Are you out for a run too?” Not many civilians jogged in secluded areas so early, not in Myeongcho. Most people knew better. Suddenly, she was very curious about this stranger. “I didn’t expect to see anyone out in this area. It’s kind of out-of-the-way, isn’t it?”
When coffee stops having any kind of effect on you, what do you do?

It had been another busy day at Rum & Gum, and Yuyan was about ready to tap out. Between the rush of customers brought in by the late-spring heat which included a crowd of bitchy moms and their bratty kids after soccer practice and the normal steady business, she was beat. She had scooped so much ice cream that her biceps hurt-- something she would have found laughable before starting her job there months previous.
However, none of that mattered now. Why? Because it was five minutes until her shift was over. And considering she hadn’t gotten notice that she was needed for any Columba business that night, she was very excited to pick up some takeout on the way home and then take a long soak in a bubble bath. Maybe she’s binge watch some trashy romance drama. Oh yes, it would be a lovely night.
So, when a tall, handsome man walked into the store, she put on her biggest smile and greeted him cheerfully: “Hello and welcome to Rum & Gum! What can I get for you?” This was the last customer standing between her and a relaxing evening, so she may as well make it count.

Yuyan plopped down in her chair, placing a bowl of sour candies and two mugs on the table between the computers. Considering the assignment they had been given, it was going to be a long night-- but that was just fine with her. She never minded working late with Naeun. The younger girl was her best friend in Columba; probably her best friend in general, honestly. They just got along really well, both professionally and personally.
“You are not going to believe how cute this guy who came to Rum & Gum today was. And he gave me his phone number! Not that I really have time to date, mind you,” she began, flashing Naeun a smile as she pulled herself closer to her keyboard and began pulling up the templates she had already made for the documents that the hacker would need. They weren’t anything too difficult, but there were quite a few of them-- she would probably just finish whipping them up as Naeun was ready to upload them
She grabbed a sour gummy worm from the bowl and popped it into her mouth, eyes on her screen. “But before I start going on and on... did anything interesting happen to you today?”

Sometimes, after a long day of serving up ice cream and forging documents, Yuyan just wanted to go to the bar, get herself a fancy cocktail that she would not be able to make herself and see what she could overhear while she unwound. Bars were good places to eavesdrop on people, after all.
However, the universe seemed to not want her to be able to relax, because she had barely had the time to order herself a mango mojito when a man had pulled up a stool uncomfortably close beside her and started chatting. At first she just ignored him, but after a few minutes of that, he seemed to get frustrated and the comments got lewder. She felt a hand on her knee and quickly pushed it away.
She was just about to stand up when someone sat on her other side, and she quickly turned to him. “Took you long enough!” She announced rather loudly, then leaned in close to his ear and added in a whisper: “Hey, um, I don’t mean to be weird, but would you mind pretending to be my date? Just for a minute. This asshole is being a little gross.”
This year started too well for about a month then switched to bitch slapping me for the following two months. It’s almost as if someone was like give him a couple of good days then show him hell for the rest of the year, and it is not even half of the year. Great prank life is pulling on me. Whoever is watching must be thrilled.
