Hey so I know Harry Potter as a series really fucked this one up in the public consciousness...

But a Wizard is not a male witch.

The closest thing to a gender specific term for “male witch” is “Warlock”.

A female Wizard on the other hand is probably more accurately referred to as an “Enchantress”, again, if we’re looking for gender specific terms.

The distinction is important, because other than gender, the difference between a witch and wizard is not only the kinds of magic and enchantments they use, but also whether or not they inherently have any magical nature.

A witch is generally considered to have an innate ability to channel magical energy, or be of inherently magical stock themselves... Whereas a wizard uses magical artifacts or brews potions and the like, sourcing the magic from outside of themselves, they study magic, professionally, but are not inherently magic by nature.

These differences in definition definitely vary depending on what tradition you look to and who you ask, but one thing remains above all else...

A male witch is a warlock, not a wizard.

They aren’t equivalent. And I hate that JKR has popularized the idea that they are.

Interestingly “warlock” is sometimes seen as derogatory the same way most female gender-specific terms for professions are... Because witchcraft is one of the long standing traditions that defaults FEMALE rather than male, so to use a male-gender specific term, rather than the gender neutral “witch” can be seen as implying they aren’t -exactly- a witch, due to their gender. But this depends on who you ask. Many male witches self identify as warlocks.
