Confession time
I am one of those ninjago fans blinded by nostalgia. It's not that the newer episodes are bad or the original seasons were better quality. It all comes down to my personal preferences. I love the original because that is the show I watched as a kid, and seeing it takes me back to the wonder and delight of being ten years old.
And even though the redesigns are cleaner, I miss Nya's red lipstick and Lloyd's softer voice and P.I.X.A.L.'s purple pants and Kai's stretchy spikes and Zane's falcon vision and Cole's bushy eyebrows and Jay's tiny smile.
And even though they've gone through incredible character growth, I miss Jay's attempts to impress people and Kai's inflated ego and ambition that covers his insecurities and Nya's determination to prove her worth and Cole's concern with disappointing the people he loves and Zane's struggles with self worth and Lloyd's dread of being alone and P.I.X.A.L.'s quiet people pleasing tendencies. They might be better, stronger people now. But I miss their messiness and clueless efforts to support each other.
And even though the plot is interesting and builds on new lore, I miss when things were (somewhat) simpler and every major threat was resolved by the end of the season and people hadn't died so many times that I'm actually hoping someone will stay dead for once and villains like Morro and Lord Garmadon both managed to send chills down my spine and make me cry in the same episode.
I have seen and enjoyed all of the new seasons, and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for Dragons Rising Season 3 to come out tomorrow. I have nothing against them, and I value the opinion of everyone who loves them. However, I doubt my enjoyment of the next set of episodes will compare to the thrill I get from rewatching the old episodes with weaker animation and the voice actor mistakes and filler episodes that do nothing to further the plot.
Those are the seasons I write obsessive fanfics about. Those are the seasons that I watch slowly, savoring every moment, rather than binging straight through. Those are the seasons that drew me back into this insane fandom, even after years of feeling betrayed by this show, because can you ever really let go of something you love?

🚴♀️ from Sweden to Switzerland deserves a special kind of recognition! Especially since two Danes thought this was so cool that they'd root for Sweden in the premiere 😎 ✌️
