I don't like some of the actors who starred in the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman movies, but I also really liked a lot of them. Danny DeVito, Tommy Lee Jones and Arnold Schwarzenegger were the three best actors in those films. Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken seem like they were pretty good in Batman Returns, though. So I think that's why Batman Returns is a film I remember very poorly (yet still view as the best of the four films, just for those three villian actors alone). Batman and Robin was pretty good too. I didn't like the Poison Ivy love pheromone stuff, but I do still fondly remember Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mister Freeze and Batgirl as Alfred's niece or whatever.
To be fair to Uma Thurman, though...she wasn't bad. The art team nailed her costume, and I do recall her being decently engaging (even if her origin and power set made me uncomfortable). Also, if you look at her wikipedia page, you see John Malkovich apparently once said there was a "haunted quality" to her or something. With a description like that, she was bound for supervillian acting. So she's fine. And although I found Jack Nicholson pretty dull in spots, he still has some small but funny parts. My bigger problems are with Jim Carrey.
Listen. I've seen Jim Carrey in things before. I've seen him, and I used to not mind him. But after seeing some of his dramatic works (and learning of his on and off relationship with vaccines), he's become a man who makes my skin crawl with his acting. He makes me feel very uncomfortable, even though that's not really something I think he means to do. But I can't look past it, and he makes things like Batman Forever or those Sonic movies feel weighed down with his presence. He scares me with his exaggeration. There's some people who get exaggerated humour done right. He isn't one of them for me. I don't want to acknowledge his career. I just don't.
I heard Robin Williams was once considered for The Riddler. I kind of wish that happened. I think Robin Williams would've done a lot better than Jim Carrey. That's all just personal opinion, but still. Without Jim Carrey, Batman Forever might stand up better. Because Tommy Lee Jones was pretty fun. I do remember that. And now I kind of wish he did more comedies, because I really did like his acting in that film as a kid.
