A woman reflects on a love from her youth and how it has shaped her future. The action is set firmly in the past, rather than shifting back and forth between time periods. A highly recommended romantic comedy/drama and the best Taiwanese film I’ve seen thus far. This does NOT disappoint.
Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned (Korea -- 2016)

A supernatural dramatic tale, this story is about the friendship between a 13-year old girl and her male classmate which is tested when he disappears without a trace after mysterious trip up the mountains. When she sees him again, days later, he has aged into an adult man, and she must decide how to keep him safe, and even if that’s entirely possible.
The Liar and His Lover (Japan -- 2013)

This film is a little controversial for some viewers, but I found it effortlessly watchable. A 25 year old sound engineer and music genius falls in love with a 17 year old student who has a powerful voice. While keeping his genius from her, he learns to trust again while helping her find her own voice. Great music and overall story. If the age gap bothers you, check out the Korean drama remake of the same name.
Secret (Taiwan -- 2007)

When a high school student hears a beautiful melody being played from a piano at his school, he is immediately drawn to the person playing it. What he discovers about her identity is tragically mysterious and fascinating to the final moments. This films plays with chronology, time and expectations of plot progression is such a great way and is a joy to watch --- especially if you love stories with a believably supernatural edge.
A Werewolf Boy (Korea -- 2012)

Told as a retrospective, this heartbreaking film tells the story of a very sick girl named Soon Yi who is moved by her mother to the country in hopes the clean air would heal her. One day they encounter a strange boy who develops a kinship with Soon Yi and she begins to warm to her new surroundings. The truth of this boy’s identity and what Soon Yi is willing to do to protect him from danger is a heartbreaking look at the limitless power of even the most tragic love, and its ultimate consequences.
