ThatOneShowFUN, a user on YouTube best known around here for glitch testing videos that work in a Mythbusters style called Eggbusters, has decided to start up a new series called Cross Examination. In the latest episode he talks a lot about variable pacing. The idea he puts forth is that the internet has been wrong at nearly every step of the way when criticizing Skyward Sword. Almost every complaint about the game can be summarized as a feeling - if handholding frustrates you, that's a feeling that makes you conclude that Skyward Sword is bad. For someone else it may not bother them, thus the game is good.
He goes on to point out how that's a flawed way to criticize video games. While it can be entertaining, he wants to get to the core of objective criticism - which means eliminating feelings from the equation on a personal level. One way he proposes to do that is with the variable pacing argument. Essentially, frustration and boredom doesn't on it's own make something bad. In fact, variable pacing practically calls for such instances to exist as it makes the great parts that much better.
So, how can this be used to analyze and criticize Skyward Sword? Well, he doesn't quite get that far here because this first episode is just explaining why the sort of criticism Skyward Sword typically receives is illogical. Still, it's worth watching as this will be a vital setup to the real conversation occurring in part 2. I don't know when part 2 is arriving, but we're hoping it's fairly soon. Do you agree that Skyward Sword is often not looked at objectively when being criticized?
