PSA from a PoC. There’s an... issue isn’t the right word, but it’s something I’ve noticed and wanted to touch on it a bit, so if you could stick around that’d be nice.
Cairo isn’t white.
“Well, duh,” you’re probably saying in your head. What I mean is that there’s so many more different experiences that a black person will have than anybody acknowledges.
I’m going to speak from personal experience, which is a similar experience to a lot of black people in America.
Most of us were hit as kids as a disciplinary action. A lot of us were raised Christian and a lot still are. Most listen to rap music.
This is the shit I mean when I say Cairo is black. There is a black culture that is never discussed in this predominantly white fandom. It should be talked about.
The black experience goes past racism. I understand that in a predominantly white fandom, many people aren’t going to know how to talk about this stuff, but it’s still worth talking about.
You can’t write her character as you write any other white character because she’s going to have a different experience, which will create a different outlook on life.
I’m going to talk about this more at a later point in time, but can y’all please take this into consideration. If you don’t know about something, just ask. But when I go to read stories about a black person, I want to be reading stories about a black person. I don’t want a white person with dark skin, I want a black person.
to honor . . . hittin on ‘er, gettin on ‘er, stayin on ‘er, and if you can’t cum in ‘er, come on ‘er (god bless america)
