You or one of your followers might now this:
I recently watched Beastmaster (1982), which was a mistake, but left me with a strange haze of deja vu.
Are ferret sidekicks a recurring trope, or did i see this movie as a child and forget about it?
(Also, the entire time I was thinking "so this is what prokopetz means when he talks about the cultural antecedents of dnd.")
I'm not aware of ferret sidekicks being particularly more common than any other sort of animal sidekick in media of that period, but there might be further examples I'm forgetting; maybe someone else reading this post can come up with one.
(And yeah, there's a very specific genre of films that was popular from the 1960s through the 1980s which Dungeons & Dragons is intensely in conversation with. The whole genre sort of dropped off the face of the planet in the mid 1990s, and these days you rarely see examples of the type that aren't specifically referencing D&D, which leads a lot of folks to mistakenly conclude that "D&D style fantasy" is a sui generis phenomenon.)

MINORS DNI I BLOCK ON SIGHT
aheem heem. whimper. it's my rainworld ocs. i decided to redesign most of them for fun and games. these are the hunted, the invasivore, the airborne, the husk, and the beastmaster.
the hunted is a small, frail slugcat that mimics the brightly colored and highly venomous tardigrades from the watcher! it is also highly vneomous and primarily aquatic living.
the invasivore is a slugcat that originates from a heavily rotted region and has thus evolved to be able to devour rot. his name is geiger and he is also heavily radioactive.
the airborne is a small, quick slugcat that lives in the sky islands and is based heavily off of a sugar glider! it glides from spot to spot, evading predators and gorging on fruit day in and day out.
the husk is a breakoff form of rot that has attempted to take the form of a slugcat. the intentions behind this are to convince other predators to bite it, spit it back out cuz it tastes bad, and become infected with the rot. it looks and behaves like a wounded slugcat to drive in future hosts.
the beastmaster is a slugcat that is attuned with nature, and can speak to wildlife. he often hunts the biggest, scariest predators out there wtih the help of his trusty king vulture that thinks he's their mate.
