The Breadwinner is Parvana—An Afghan young girl whose family is just one of the victims of the war in Afghanistan. Even she had an older sister, Nooria, Parvana was the one to go to work with her hanicapped father and look after the family when he was arrested by the cruel Talibs.
Their good life shifted course when the bombing began. From luxirious houses, they were forced to move from one safer place to another to save themselves from all the bombing. Now they lived in a very small room in a ruined building. The Talibans have implemented strict laws against the Afghans. Women are kicked out of jobs, girls are not allowed to go to school, they and worst, females are not allowed to go out of the house and they must cover themselves with Burqas. All of the working and shopping must be done by the males. People who will disobey is Parvana’s mother used to be a writer; while his father used to be a teacher, before the school was bombed and has taken away his ability to walk on his own.
After the night Parvana’s father was arrested, life became harder. Mother became really sick and depressed and only, poor little Parvana is there work for all of them and carry a heavier burden. One day, Mrs. Weera came, one of her mother’s good friend and tried to cheer things up.
Parvana was disguised as a boy so she could freely go out and work for the family. Little Parvana did what her father has done before, reading and writing letters in the marketplace to earn money since they were only few educated people left in Afghanistan who could do such job. By then, Parvana has been the Breadwinner. Luckily, she found a former classmate who also disguised as a boy, Shauzia, and they became really good friends. Nooria has to get married to a boy from city of Mazal, so the entire family flew there except for Parvana and Mrs. Weera. Parvana saved a girl from Mazal who revealed that city has been invaded by the Talibans too. This worried Parvana a lot. But good things still happen, two men returned her father home after being released from prison. And both of them decided to find her mother and siblings. Parvana said goodbye to Mrs. Weera who’s also heading off to Pakistan; to the mysterious lady behind the wall who gave her gifts during her work in the marketplace; and to her friend Shauzia who promised that they’d see each other again, on the first day of Spring at the Eiffel Tower, twenty years from now. She might not know yet what will happen in twenty years, if the war would be over, but Parvana is ready to face whatever comes because she have her father and soon enough, they’ll be reunited as a family. -
The Breadwinner draw how life is like in Afghanistan. All the cruelty of the Talibs, merciless killings, bombing everywhere and the chaos. How the war have destroyed lives and families, and how a young child endures everything. It’s hard to imagine the situation they have everyday; the risks of getting killed any time and all the hardships the Afghans have suffered from the Talibans. Parvana’s character as a courageous young girl can inspire millions. Her will to stand for her family at a very young age shown that she is indeed, valiant. It is inspiring that in spite of despair, she and family kept standing still, and hoping that everything will be alright again.
Parvana’s stimulating story that has been created because of the war is somewhat similar to one of the books I read before, the Year of Impossible goodbyes, where children have been victims of war, but more than that, these young people stand out as great heroes.
With all the war that has not been over yet, those who live in safe lands should be really lucky and thankful. And just like Parvana’s family, all of us hope that no more families would be destroyed, that there wouldn’t be child who will become a victim, and that wars would soon be ceased in all parts of the world.
The Breadwinner, Parvana’s story and Parvana herself is just one of the many forms of braveheart inspiration and heroes that should be recognized.
