Birthday Dinner At The Cecil Harlem
^ The only way to start a restaurant review ^
Back in March the beau and I went out to dinner for my birthday. Instead of going to a tried and true spot we decided to try something different and explore our neighbor Harlem. We found ourselves at The Cecil Harlem, an Afro-Asian -American restaurant. Now that’s a mouthful. It may sound like an odd mix but it is executed so well.
Upon entering there is a small lounge space and bar. Above the bar is a beautiful sculpture of a couple and the quote “ a kiss to build a dream on..” The lights were low with lit candles and jazz played over the system. Further towards the back is the larger dinner seating section. There are not too many intimate tables available but this night there were several large groups out for dinner and celebrating. The back dinning room had beautiful artwork on the walls and a screen projecting what may have been 1940s era Harlem in black and white.
The beau ordered the Thai 75 cocktail and we shared Oxtail dumplings (4) in green apple curry. According to the beau the cocktail felt like it was missing something, maybe a bit more Thai Basil but the dumplings were great and the curry sauce was finger licking good. *We enjoyed them so much we forget to get a pic*
Their main dishes left the beau and I tied up deciding what we wanted to try. Thanks to our waiters suggestion he ordered the Feijoda (Spicy Black Beans, Oxtails, Merguez Lamb Sausage) and I ordered from the Rice Wok Bar ( Pineapple Black Fried Rice with Smoked County Cut Pork Ribs and curry). The Feijoda came with a a hearty piece of Oxtail that was tender and fell off the bone. Being from the Caribbean neither the beau nor I had an issue with the spice level.
The Pineapple Black Fried Rice was hearty and loaded with carrots, edamame and onions. I expected it to have a little more sweetness since there is Pineapple but the flavor profile was more savory. The curry sauce helps add a bit of sweetness. The pork ribs were grilled to perfection and had a great smoke flavor. I had to wash my hands a few times to get the smoked/grilled sent off my fingers.
We left our plates clean as a whistle!
For dessert we tried the rice pudding. It reminded me a bit like creme brulee because of its hard sugar top shell. The passion fruit curd that topped the rice pudding was a little to sweet for me. I would have preferred a thinner layer of passion fruit curd on top but I would try it again.
Tip: Next door to The Cecil is their sister jazz lounge and restaurant Minton’s. They play live jazz everyday until 11 pm and offer southern fare. We can’t wait to go back to Cecil’s but they my be our first stop prior for some live jazz.
