Martha Wells describing a Raksura:
Ma'am, that's a Gargoyle circa 1994
@sun-shimmer I did some tracing practice and turned it into a drawing! ^w^ its an arbora from The Books of the Raksura
Just started listening to The Cloud Roads by Martha Wells on audiobook. If you like Murderbot you’ll probably like Moon, too. He feels like a prototype. Be forewarned, though. Not ace at all. :)
2/5: Parts of this I really enjoyed. It's a fascinating world, peopled with dozens if not hundreds of sentient races, from large, sapient, h
You know, when Martha Wells made a whole big deal about the Indigo Cloud court using giant baskets they hang from the ceiling for beds, I, being a writer, and being a reader of competant writers, assumed she was doing basic set up for them later using these giant bed baskets to carry people to safety.
But no. That was me expecting way too much from her. They do not use the basket beds or any other kind of basket to carry people. The idea is never even broached by a single character. Even when it gets to the point you want to throw the book out the window out of frustration that no one is suggesting this extremely simple fucking solution to all their problems.
It's just bad writing.
And then she just did the same thing again in Rapport. (Which still has all the blatant pathetic typos 21 days after being published, despite these people pretending they're Professional Publishers Who Deserve Your Money.)
She goes out of her way to show us this bullet proof vest that ART can magically 3D print. That we're acting like is some totally brand new thing no one's ever thought of before. And then it was for literally no reason at all. No one gets shot at or even is threatened with getting shot or stabbed at all.
She's literally just bringing shit up for no fucking reason at all and it never comes up again and wasn't actually important, it was literally just there to waste time.
