a little bit of angst from future installments of the Devilverse:
It’s been awhile since Aedan had one of these cold mornings. When she wakes up feeling like she’s been sleeping too far from the grate for a few nights. Like the vacuum of space seeped around the portview and wrapped itself in her lungs. Where the chill has settled into her thigh like a chunk of frozen stone and it makes her want to claw the scar tissue out and toss it out an airlock.
When telling herself it isn’t real doesn’t work.
So she gives into the layers, the second pair of socks in her running shoes, the long sleeved undershirt under another under the thermal, the leggings under her cargos, and Kaidan’s hoodie- the scent of him only a memory but as real as the chill in her bones.
She leaves the mitts in her bag, just tucking her thumbs through convenient holes in the cuffs, and the beanie too. She can’t get away with them here for the same reason she can’t shake the chill.
Enemy territory. And the backup she thought she’d be connecting with not talking to her. Not really.
Can’t show any hint she cares, either. She’s here for the job.
She heads straight for the coffee pot when the doors of the lift open.
Lawson, too observant for anyone’s own good, lets a micron of a frown venture out over her tea cup. “Is there something wrong with the atmospheric control in the observation room? We can have EDI run diagnostics,” she offers.
“No.” The coffee’s hot enough- she knows it is, but it barely thaws her throat out enough to talk. “It’s fine.” She reminds herself of the cameras on the deck and smiles, coolly. “Thanks for asking, though.” As she walks back to the lift, she doesn’t wrap her hands around the mug. Cameras in the lift, too.
She’ll run it out on the treadmill. Maybe hit the shower and jimmy the temperature controls so she can get it hot enough, after.
Or she’ll get lucky and she’ll get to strap into armor, black out her faceplate, and actually feel warm, again.
