The Duchess:

She was the ruler of a small country whose church taught that their leaders were intercessors for the gods, and enough people believed that the Duchess watched over them that when she died, she had to. She's a mostly powerless goddess, without the ability to change anything or help her people, so all she can do is watch them be ground down by the church of their main god (who is dead, and all that's being heard is meaningless rules and echoes). She's desperate for her people to stop believing in her and take matters into their own hands. "Find yourself a worthier god. And let…me…go! All those prayers, all those entreaties…to me! Too many hands clasped, that could more gainfully answer your prayers by effort and resolve! And what was I? Just a rather stupid woman when I was alive. But you believed I watched over you, and listened to you…and so I had to, I had to listen, knowing there was no help…I wish people would not be so careless about what they believe."

Blade:

Was a mortal that placed importance on his identity as 'short-lived,' having had his home destroyed by one group of immortal and later facing discrimination from others. He ended up infected with immortality after helping a close friend commit a terrible sin. He can't die, and the source of his immortality behaves like a parasite, affecting his mind. Despite being able to heal any injury he's still scarred and has issues with his hands. His regeneration was even used to torture him. 'Blade' is used instead of his real name because he no longer saw himself as worthy or human enough to use it, disassociating himself from who he used to be out of shame and self hatred.
