why do you consider the dull fully emerged? and when, if it has, did it fully happen? are there events that caused you to be sure?
I wouldn’t say it is fully yet, but the global quarantine was certainly an inciting incident to push it much closer. Contractions, if you will.
Cranes and Cranes and Cranes and Cranes by Johnny Foreigner
This song is not on Bandcamp
This Song Is: Dull
Secondary Influences: Beholding, Lonely, End
Explanation: I chose dull for this one because of the constant reference to replacing anything in a town that could have life with nothing but blank housing. That could also be played as stranger, but its a little loose fit to be strangers deal in my mind.

okay so my friends forced me to read hdg and now i am obsessed with the (little amount of actually canon) lore. because a lot of it parallels INSANELY well to c.ob, especially how they describe hyperspace.
the traction engines used by the affini are PRETTY MUCH JUST DULL HEARTS. “pieces of it are physically in hyperspace” like for what we are given on the dull and how dull vessels work this is pretty much the same concept.
the main difference between affini hyperspace use and obesk use of the dull is in the actually passing through it part but they don’t seem mutually exclusive? the wiki says the affini use exotic matter to weaken space around the ship to pull it through into hyperspace, whereas dull vessels (given what we know) need a contrivance to pass through.
but from of the descriptions of dull ceremonies from idril in the pale halls where the corru pulls the dull into reality, it seems like the same general concept of pulling at space.
i am relatively sure you could au something into existence where the affini find obeski before terra (maybe mid-search for the location of the call? you could probably say that they were found because of the amount of holes they poked in the dull) and there would be absolutely zero lore conflicts.
the only conflict that could exist and that isn’t specified in what i’ve read so far is if affini traction engines are biomechanical, they will Actually Just Die upon entering the dull. but you could handwave this away by making the affini either have some meteorite-equivalent mass of corru on their home planet that they can actually use for corrucystic technology, or say it’s fully mechanical and using exotic matter to phase parts of itself into the dull
and don’t even get me started on the affini-qou biology parallels with central cores and renewals
what fear would a time loop fall under
Spiral, along with the Vast’s temporal aspect. Or, of course, even better; the theoretical Dull.
This blog is the first place i heard of the dull, is it introduced in protocol or??
No, it is a theoretical Entity that multiple fans have independently come up with! Which I think is very fun and gives it credence as a possibility. It is the fear of monotony and stagnation, inverse to the Terrible Change; you can search the tag for more.
Hello! hope you're doing well.
I come to request your expertise: One of the worst experiences of my life was undergoing a fairly serious surgery, after which I had to be kept under observation in the recovery room for 24 hours. To be perfectly clear, it wasn't the operation itself that affected me, nor the physical pain when I woke up, but rather the unbearable wait for nothing for an entire day, confined to a hospital bed. The absolute inability to find a comfortable position for even a minute, because movement itself is impossible, trapped as you are by countless IVs, needles, and cables that rush into your body and lounge there like a boa constrictor. The endless ballet of nurses bustling around your bed, around the beds of others, patients coming and going, taken to the operating room or to their rooms on their rickety stretchers, all delivered from this antechamber of resurrection before you. They bring you neither food nor drink, because the anesthetic would make you vomit. There is nothing else to do but sleep in the recovery room, but even that is impossible with the moans of the suffering patients in the beds next to you, the footsteps and laughter of the nurses on duty, the lights they leave on all night to correctly measure their injections. It is this leaden boredom that I still think about, so heavy and obsessive. I am very active and athletic, so the feeling of being trapped inside my own body, unable to move anything but my eyes, which could only see a white curtain anyway, was, for lack of a better word, claustrophobic. I don't know if you've ever had to lie motionless for 24 hours straight, without any distraction, without even the mercy of sleep for more than twenty minutes—restless micro-naps before the hum of a machine or the squeak of a stretcher nails you to your body again. It's awful enough to make you beg for it to stop, and if there is a purgatory, this is exactly how I imagine it.
Even if it wasn't a frightening experience per se (more monstrously uncomfortable), which entity do you think it most closely resembles? The Flesh, for its intimate relationship with the body? The Buried, for the feeling of crushing immobility and claustrophobia? Another? Thanks a lot for your contributions!
Both of those would be my best approximation if I am to be restricted to the proven and long established Fears… but you should peruse the tag on this post for more about my theory of the Dull 👁👁
