His Eye Is On the Sparrow // The Harmonizing Four
Whether you share their faith or not, The Harmonizing Four have an undeniable charisma that they bring to their gospel. And it's lucky for us they do it so hypnotically: the need for hope is not limited by faith, nor the passing of time. Across decades from the mid-century, they offer a reminder that as uncertain as things may be today, we will find a solid ground to stand on.
Wade In The Water, The Harmonizing Four
Back in 1971 indoor shopping malls were kind of new, at least new to me. I was 16 and somehow had a little money, so I went to the brand new record store at the indoor shopping mall. The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album had just come out and was prominently displayed. I don't quite know how to account for my bewilderment, and my secreted-fascination. I went over to the "Folk" section and ended up buying a Phil Ochs record--I'd heard of him probably from reading The Strawberry Statement, but never had heard him. I also bought an album by The Harmonizing Four, God Will Take Care of You. This site says the album was pretty close to a bootleg and the artist probably didn't get compensation--sigh. Anyhow the album, and this song in particular was a revelation to me.

Silent Night - The Harmonizing Four (Silent Night / Oh, Little Town Of Bethlehem, 1967)
Whoa. It has been a while since a song has brought me to tears. This shit is for realzzz.
