Having just read "The Hearing" in OOTP, I have to ask, "How the Hell did we get Madam Bones as the super 'by the book won't let injustice stand' Head of DMLE"????

Because what I saw from her in this chapter is that she is no better than Fudge. She lets Fudge change the time and place of the hearing, lets him railroad Harry without allowing him to do more than say 'yes, but' and then cuts Fudge to do the SAME thing herself.

At no point, does SHE point out what a farce a trial this is. She doesn't point out that he's a barely fifteen year old boy being put on trial in the Death Eater Courtrooms in front of the entire wizengamot (which is 50 people who had to have known at least the night before becuase its too early for them to have not known). She doesn't point out that it was done in front of a magic aware muggle. She doesn't point out that Fudge isn't allowing Harry to speak his OWN Defense. She doesn't point out Fudge's obvious bias.

Like literally, she is just like Fudge, the only difference is that she was curious that Harry could produce a real patronus.

I have a whole Rant about Fudge and Dumbledore but I really want to know, how did she become this paragon of good when she's literally only seen in this scene and she's no better???

Judicatrix - chapter 7 - The Hearing

So, here is another chapter. Jon presides a hearing and is told everything about the day of Brandon’s (his father’s) death.... Also on AO3.

There was a murmur in the courtyard, when Catelyn and the bastard came out. With the horn of Winterfell by his side, Jon clearly looked like Brandon must have looked when he was a young man. His stride was confident, but it was different from what Brynden remembered of the former Lord of Winterfell Brandon had been a prideful man and had had a more arrogant bearing. Brynden had not known the Lord of Winterfell well before his wedding with Catelyn, but he had been on the campaign against Walder, at his side, to take revenge for his brother-in-law.  Brandon had had all the air of a man accustomed to ruling.

Sansa trailed some steps after her mother and her brother, her own dog by her side as well as the striking white dog, that was Jon’s. It is a pity, she looks so much like her mother. Brynden wondered briefly, if Catelyn had ordered her daughter to bring her dog. The dog had a look that came close enough to a wolf to remind everyone, that Sansa was the heiress of Winterfell, and not the young man, who had the horn. It would be like her to think of a detail like that.

Catelyn gave a little speech, warning every witness that had come to speak the truth and nothing but the truth, even though this was just to be a hearing and not a real trial.

The Bastard sat down on a chair that had been prepared. He looked decidedly uncomfortable.

Sansa slipped back and mingled with the people in the back, but her hair gave her away. The Bastard’s eyes searched the courtyard until he had found her.

The Bastard might feel uncomfortable, but he knew what to do.

“Lady Catelyn bade me to do a hearing on my father’s death, so that any lingering doubts may be laid to rest. Let me assure you, good people of Winterfell, that I do not think this is necessary, but since Lady Catelyn has an impeccable record as a judicatrix, we will proceed, so that nobody can say, that the judge herself is beyond the law. Therefore, our emperor Charles ordered me to preside over this hearing. If – and only if – a trial comes to pass, it will be the emperor who will sit in judgement. Will the witnesses please step forward.”

Brynden and several of the servants of Winterfell who had been alive to see Brandon’s sudden death in the courtyard of Winterfell stepped in front of the table.

As a nobleman, Brynden was the first to be called.

“I am Brynden, son of Oswell. I came to Riverrun with my sister Minisa and have first served Lord Hoster and then Lady Catelyn.”

“Could you please tell us, as to the best of your memory, what happened? I suggest you start with the day Lady Catelyn married my father.”

“Lord Hoster had some problems with a man he had considered his closest confidant for years and he needed allies quickly. That is why the wedding of Brandon and Catelyn was arranged to take place immediately after the deal had been settled. Catelyn and Brandon married at Christmas at Riverrun. People might have told you, that the bride was not happy, but Catelyn was still in mourning.”

Brynden felt obliged to add this. He looked at his niece who shook her head slightly. Why does she shake her head? If I don’t address this, someone else will tell the Bastard, that the bride was not happy.

“Why was she in mourning?”

“Lady Lysa had died not long before that, and the sisters had been close.”

“Why such a rush then?”

“Lord Hoster had been betrayed, he wanted to thwart the traitor’s plans. He insisted on a swift wedding to counter this. After Christmas he went to treat with Lord Walder, but was murdered against guest right. On epiphany, Brandon set out to avenge his father-in-law. That horn you carry. We heard it he last time, when Brandon left Riverrun. Benjen took it with him, when he left after the campaign had ended. Catelyn travelled to Winterfell.”

“Where were you?”

“I rode with Lord Brandon. We returned to Winterfell after a few weeks, just before Lent which was early in that year.

I was close behind him, when he rode in. He dismounted and Catelyn was there to bid him welcome. She held the cup ready. I saw steam rise in the cold winter air from the red wine. Catelyn greeted him with the traditional words and added some spice to the wine. She drank herself, she swallowed deeply three times. I saw it clearly.”

Brynden still remembered that a very small droplet had sat in the corner of Catelyn’s mouth when she had put down the cup and smiled at her husband.  

“Brandon smiled at her, took the cup and drank it up. He took two strides then, maybe three, and then fell to the ground.”

“Did you have a look at Lord Brandon’s face?”

“He looked mildly surprised, but he did not look as if he had been in pain. He hadn’t cried out.”

“Who prepared the wine?”

Old Nan came forward. In her long-winded way she told everything. She went on about how she had looked after Lord Brandon when he was a child, how she had told him stories, and it took her a good while to reach the day of Brandon’s death. The Bastard did his best not to show his annoyance, but Brynden could see it clearly. Nan finally told about how she had heated the wine, how she had cut the spices herself, knowing just how Brandon liked them, that she had even filled the wolf cup herself.

Even with all the diversions that Nan’s thought necessary to relate, it became quite clear, that Catelyn had not touched the wine, nor the cup, nor the spice before Nan had handed her the cup. Brynden nodded with quiet satisfaction.

“So, what happened to rest of the spices?”, the Bastard asked.

Nan did not remember, but started on another long speech about how Brandon had always liked her spiced wine the best.

To give the Bastard his due, he did not interrupt Nan, but listened with patience. He then questioned the servants that had been there on that fateful day. His eyes wandered around the room, but he put in the occasional follow-up question and Brynden doubted that anyone but him who stood so close to him could have seen how his eyes betrayed that he was annoyed.

“So, you gave the order to give the spices to the pigs.”

Vayon, the old stewart nodded. He glanced apologetically at Catelyn.

“I didn’t know Lady Catelyn that well, at that time, and I just wanted to make sure.”

“I take it, the pigs did not show any strange reaction.”

“None at all.”

The Bastard finally addressed Catelyn.

“Lady Catelyn, do you have anything to add to this?”

Catelyn stood up, her back straight. “Is there nothing you want to know of me?”, she asked back.

“I for my part, am satisfied with what I heard.”

Catelyn looked him straight in the eye. “I feel obliged to admit, that I did not love your father.”

The Bastard barked a short laugh. “It would be very strange if you did. You barely knew him.”

He stood. “I declare myself satisfied with what I heard about Lord Brandon’s death. It is clear, that it was the Almighty’s will to let him die so suddenly and that Lady Catelyn had no hand in it.”

The people of Winterfell stood as well, ready to disperse and go about their tasks.

Jon raised a hand. Brynden loathed the way, the Bastard took command so easily.

“I want to make another declaration.” He waited until he had everyone’s attention again. Brynden feared what would come next.

“I won’t lay claim to Winterfell. I have a place at the emperor’s court, and I don’t want Winterfell. I will fight anyone who wants to take it from my sister. I pledge myself to protect her.”

Brynden was pleasantly surprised. Sansa stood, delighted, her cheeks flushed with the sudden attention. The people in the courtyard clapped and Jon nodded at Sansa and smiled, his teeth flashing.

Catelyn only gave the barest hint of a smile. She approached Jon as is he was a skittish filly.

“Thank you, Jon,” she said. “So, we have an understanding.”

Jon turned to her, his eyes leaving his sister’s face. He nodded.

“Then I demand a token for your promise. Give me the horn.” She stretched out her hand.

Jon unfastened the horn from his belt, with some reluctance, if Brynden read him correctly.

He got a hold of himself.

“Here you are,” he said and handed it over.

Catelyn took the horn and went to the battlements that ringed the courtyard with a determined stride. Jon followed her, a look of alarm on his face.

“The horn sounds terrible to my ears. It would always remember me of the day Brandon rode from Riverrun to avenge my father. It will not be an heirloom for Sansa.”

She swung out her arm, to get momentum, and then let go of the horn. It flew over the battlement in a wide arc. Jon jumped towards the ridge, but he was too late. He could only follow the fall of the horn with his eyes.

The Finnish nominees for The Phonophile Nordic Music Prize

Hey folks, the winner of the Nordic Music Prize 2017 will be presented at the by:Larm-festival in Oslo in the beginning of March, and this year there are three Finnish nominees among the twelve nominated. All nominated artists have released an album during 2016. I thought I’d present them to you quickly.

The Hearing - This is a one woman orchestra whose real name is Ringa Manner, also known from the art pop band Pintandwefall. Her second solo album is called Adrian, and it’s apparently named after the main protagonist in a book called The Liar by British actor/author Stephen Fry. 

Her latest music video is for the song Too Happy. 

Oranssi Pazuzu - The psychedelic black metal band has been noted to have been noted by James Hetfield of Metallica. They released the album Värähtelijä (= Oscilliator) during last year, and it has been widely celebrated in the metal community. The band’s music takes you on a cosmically cacophonic auditory trip.

The band’s latest music video is for the song Lahja (= Gift).

Mikko Joensuu - This man is the singer of the indie rock band Joensuu 1685, but lately he’s been going solo under his own name. The album Amen 2 is the second album in what eventually will be a trilogy of albums. A big theme on the albums is to come to terms with personal beliefs.

Mikko’s latest music video is one of those new 360° videos. It’s for the song Drop Me Down.
