my kid has gotten me into kpop demon hunters (the soundtrack is so good!), and i can't help but be reminded of buffy the vampire slayer.
-demon hunter that has demon inside of her
-girls/young women being the chosen one(s)
-gwi-ma = the first
-sealing the honmoon / trying to keep the hellmouth closed
-jinu = mysterious evil boyfriend with a backstory = angel/angelus (but also he kind of reminds me of spike, too)
GET READY FOR A MONSTER OF A POST! (grrr Arghh!)
I had the immense pleasure of attending HELLMOUTHCON hosted at the one and only actual hellmouth, Torrance high school this past weekend! I donned my Sunnydale high school, cheer cheerleader attire, and for the second year in a row, SLAYED the hell mouth!
I did a lot of people watching, ate a ton of snacks, perused the sales floor, and bumped into a lot of faces I saw last year (Hey couple who for the second year in a row dressed up like Joyce and Giles and gave out mini band candies!)
My favorite time was spent listening to SPIKE AND DRUSILLA tell the tale of how they were cast into their AMAZING and ICONIC TV roles. That was about 45mins long and I recorded 18 of them lol if I can figure out a way to post that almost 20 minute long video, I will immediately do so!
But for now, please enjoy these pics from the con!
"The Mayor built this town for demons to feed on, and come graduation day, he's getting paid" is a line with so many implications, yet it's never mentioned again? Sunnydale is possibly like that™️ on purpose, a town built on a hellmouth to draw the demonic energy into our world. Demons feed on the misery they are able to cause, like the demon in Gingerbread that lives on creating distrust and hatred.
Putting the high school right above the doorway is just the finishing touch, a miniature society filled with the same experiences, boosted by hormones and the novelty of experiencing everything for the first time.
The Mayor is responsible for way more problems than he is given credit for. Also, could they have avoided all their problems by just evacuating the town earlier?
The over all TRAGEDY of Johnathan's character has been rolling around my brain VIOLENTLY today.
Buffy talks him down in the tower > He delivers "the Class Protector" speech > they give each other mutual advice in Superstar > Develops his own friendships > Giving into peer pressure > fugitive > Sacrificed to open the Hellmouth.
And it's kind of heartbreaking. That always on the outside looking in-ness about him.
Seeing him go along with his buddies probably telling himself the usual lines to sooth himself.
(We're just messing around. It was never supposed to go this far. We didn't mean to.)
Him accepting that he failed a bit as a person
"We deserve this"
And the way he dies. Betrayed by a friend.
It's like Buffy saved his life because he was fated to open the seal. Their fates constantly intertwined but never connected.
painting 1 of 4 from an idea i had about the hellmouth interpreting it as a hole in reality rather than in the ground. i've not done 2,3,4 yet but plan to iterate on this.
