I understand both sides. Both Roy and Don, in their own ways, are right. That’s what makes the scene so compelling.

Roy voices the frustration of someone who wants meaning & justice in a world that seems corrupted by manipulation. He's the idealist who believes that if people could just wake up, they’d stop chasing empty desires & build something real. It’s a worldview fueled by hope.

Don speaks for the disillusioned. The ones who have woken up & found that meaning wasn’t waiting. For Don, illusions aren’t sins, it's survival. He’s not trying to oppress anyone; he’s trying to make life bearable. To him, selling comfort, even false comfort, is a kind of mercy.

You could say Roy is trying to dismantle the machine, while Don is saying, "There is no machine. Just gears spinning in the void." One wants to fight the system; the other thinks the system is the only thing stopping people from realizing the void beneath it.

It's an amazing scene; layered, haunting, and deceptively simple. It’s the kind of scene that sticks because it’s not just about Roy and Don; it’s about us. About the choices we make every day between comfort and truth, illusion and reality, survival and rebellion.

What makes it especially brilliant is how neither man changes the other's mind. There's no triumphant speech, no big shift, just two philosophies clashing in a quiet explosion. And even though the words are few, the weight behind them is immense.

It’s also classic Mad Men, a show that doesn’t hand you answers, just perspectives. It trusts you to sit with the discomfort and complexity.

I feel it's a moment that defines Don Draper so clearly: a man who sells dreams because he doesn’t believe in any. And Roy? He’s the ghost of what Don could have been, if he’d chosen anger over apathy, rebellion over resignation.
