Don’t hate me for saying it,  I know no one else does,  But those other loves never died. 

Not the day I met you or any day after.  Not the misplaced, unrequited, stolen loves,  Not the drunken daydream lovers. 

I loved you more, so I put  The box back on the shelf,  But tape doesn’t hold over dust And sometimes I still wonder if they’re alright. 

I won’t apologise - I know you do, too, But I wouldn’t have you if you didn’t love. It wouldn’t be a miracle that that heart of yours fits within your ribcage,  If love was not a verb that continues.

Those other lives I could have had are A blessing, a worn path in my mind, But one I would not wish on anyone.  I don’t long for those lives the way I long for your heat.

The way I long for the safety of your arms.
