It’s Not A Joke: Your Wife is Not the Leader; The Consumers Are!
After reading the article “Riding the Hashtag in Social Media Marketing”, I went to search Gary Vaynerchuk’s picture online. Surprisingly, he is much more handsome than I thought. Based on the description of the article, I imagined that he is a bald guy with a pair of small, savvy eyes. Hmm… this is totally good news for me because I am now thinking about stopping him on his way to work and holding his leg tightly, then begging him to let me be the intern of his company! I don’t want that before the holding thing I regret and buy a wig for him!!
That is a joke. It's not funny because it’s not true. But what’s true is that I really like to work for that kind of company, a smart, lively and creative one. However, some other people may not like this style, such as my boyfriend who is prefer an earthy, quiet, and strict working atmosphere. Same as the customer engagement. In Patrick Spenner and Karen Freeman’s eyes, their customers are all prefer a “quiet relationship” with you. What they want is that you just help them to solve the problems and make correct decisions, and that is enough. Don't engage them with too much information to fill up their daily life, or they will get pissed off and yell at you like the old lady living next door when you are holding a party. On contrary, what my future boss Gary Vaynerchuk tries to do is to build up a personalized conversation that centers on the audience by social media. He posts his audience’s point of view on his own twtter and replies the audience as soon as possible. What is different is that he is not imposing the mass information to the consumers, but asking for what they need. This “jab, jab, jab, right hook” (it means give, give, ask) strategy is really effective and increase the engagement of consumers on social media.
Obviously, these two viewpoints are totally different but they both target the same goal—increasing sales and profit. In my eyes there is no one winner better than the other. What they both want to do is to satisfy their audience and attract them to be their loyalty consumers. By using the “simple” marketing strategy, you’ll appeal people who prefer a quiet lifestyle and a clean mailbox. By using Gary’s “jab” thing, people who are interested in it are the ones that chase a loud, energetic, and active life. For example, when watching the “The Kims” advertisement on the big billboard, some people will give it a smile and praise it as interesting then go on driving or walking. But others will feel it so humorous and laugh loudly. That’s not enough. They would even search about the “The Kims” information online or even post something interesting as a comment on their twitter or Facebook. So you see the difference? In some sense, the former kind of people would like to be treated simple. But the latter ones love to be engaged and take part in the marketing process.
So just let your consumers be the leaders. At home, you listen to your wife, guess what her thinks about, when is her period so you would be like a sheep at that time to avoid fighting. As a kiss-ass marketer, you should listen to your audience and your consumers, and make marketing strategy based on what kind of people they are. Give what they need and like. They like you so that they will keep a good relationship with you. If they are naughty people, do Gary’s strategy and make the relationship focus hype. If they are little quiet sheep, do the “simple” set and keep the relationship as a strong cornerstone. So now what is crucial is that to anticipate and guess who are your consumer, and what kind of consumers they are. If you are Red Bull, then your consumers are mostly adventurers and passionate to life. But if you are CVS Phamercy, you’ll know what you should do. You can never make people think that your pills are like little rabbits jumping all the time!!!
Maybe I can tell the joke of my future leader Gary and imagine he is a bald guy. But I never joke about this: The consumers are your real leaders. Guess what your leaders think about then you will be upgraded. Just a reminder -- don't tell your wife about this unless you want to be homeless.
