While you loved me I stood with one foot out the door. You spoke of our house, And the names of our children, And our family vacations, While I planned our breakup. Your hearth looked warm and inviting But so long I resisted. You began to coax me in. I closed the door behind me. You said: take your coat off and stay awhile. You said: We belong together. I listened. I took off my coat. The third time you said I love you I said it back. When I tried to run you said: I need you. and I stayed, because being needed felt so important. Little by little I crossed the threshold of your home. I took part in your wild fantasies. I stayed the night and ate breakfast in the morning wearing your shirt, with your mother. I thought: maybe this is  better. Then one day you looked up and saw me in your living room, vulnerable in my socked feet. You were surprised, as though you had not lured and dragged me here. You said plainly: I liked you better halfway out the door, Go, I do not want you like this.

I left in shame without looking back
