A sordid Hollywood classic
"Sebastian loves you very much I think. They are very good these English romantic friendships... if they don't go on too long. For you it's just, how do you say it, a phase. But I think it's more than that for poor Sebastian. Tread carefully Mr Ryder."
Astute Carla, Lord Marchmain's mistress, warns Charles not to break Sebastian's heart.
I love this scene on The Lido in Venice. The last of the Summer and the last time Sebastian, Julia and Charles are all together happy and carefree. Things will never be the same again 😢

The score for this particular scene ("The Lido"), by Adrian Johnston, is again magically beautiful.

“Brown Hart Gardens and the Mayfair Archipelago” _ by Timothy Percival _ 13.01.2020
“In the late 19th century, Brown Hart Gardens supported the movement of tenants from old houses into its new dwellings. Gradually improving the tenants’ quality of life, the process complements the program of O. M. Unger’s villa. The proposal will take this idea forward, offering formal support to those in need. Working with charitable foundations, the villa will provide a space to train and develop those otherwise reliant on financial aid. The fundamental program is one of generating independence. Expressing the contrast between the public and private, the proposal frames both contexts in the views to and from the site. Combining the villa’s private spaces, the public grounds, and the public streets off-site, the views provide a range of combinations reacting to both program and purpose.
The Villa
The villa as an architectural type, is tied to the expression of privacy. Of private land, of private space, and of private view. It exists in relation to the surrounding public context. It exists in relation to the surrounding public context. O. M. Ungers frames this privacy not as a display of wealth or ownership, but as an expression of independence and personality. As a desire for a greater quality of life. As a desire for a greater quality of life. The Lido
Water is of course a fundamental requirement for any lido, however it is the relationship between the water and the ‘non-water’ which is key to the spatial design. This relationship informs how the lido is used, who ‘participates’ in the water, and who ‘spectates’ from dry. The lido is a casual manifestation of water. Its use is not geared toward swimming at distance or speed such as with a conventional swimming pool. Nor does it instigate the structured recreational behaviours often exhibited in bathhouses, sequentially moving between hot and cold water, along with saunas and steam rooms.”
