After the Apollo 14 crew was released from its weeks-long monastic quarantine in Houston, red-haired Stu Roosa had quickly grown tired of a joke that made the rounds. It went thusly:

"Do you know who went into quarantine?"

"Sure, it was Captain Shepard, Commander Mitchell, and Major Roosa."

"Yeah, but do you know who came out of quarantine? It was Captain Shepard, Commander Mitchell, and 'that cute little redhead.'"

Pete Conrad, before his Apollo 12 moon-landing flight, fell victim to a stunt (that KSC Security Chief Charles) Buckley helped pull. The astronaut had gotten a kick out of a six-foot stuffed gorilla that belonged to a couple of space-buff friends in Florida, Peter and Julie Firestone. Conrad called the gorilla Irving -- Irving Glick. Irving was present at a private dinner party for Conrad the night before launch day, and afterwards it was quietly suggested that Buckley take the lifelike gorilla and prepare a little surpirse for the astronaut.

Late that night Buckley loads Irving into the front passenger seat of his car and drives to the space center. Stopped by guards at the gate, he has a little explaining to do before they let him pass, even if he is chief of security.

Now it's 2 o'clock in the morning and Buckley is lugging Irving down a dim, deserted corridor and suddenly an engineer steps out of a doorway, sees this huge, hairy gorilla in a man's arms, screams, leaps back inside, and slams the door shut.

A short while later Conrad strides into his prelaunch breakfast room, and there in the seat of honor, the mission commander's seat - his seat - sits one Irving Glick. Conrad breaks up. Tensions ease. On to the launch.

Seven years after he spent a record seventy-one hours on the moon, Duke was telling a group of high school students in Seattle that it wasn't long after his space adventure that "only my wife and momma remembered." A year after that, all he could count on was Momma, he joked, and to jog the memories of his wife and sons "I kept pinning notes up around the house."

Driving a Used Vehicle

John Young's first official act as the new chief of NASA's Astronaut Office after his Shuttle flight was to introduce publicly the crew for the second mission -- Joe Engle and Richard Truly. Warning them to be careful with Columbia because it was the only Shuttle orbiter around at the moment, the Florida-reared spaceman presented Engle with a three-foot-long "ignition" key to the vehicle.

Engle played the gag to the hilt: "My first question is, Would you buy a used spacecraft from this gentleman here? I heard it was driven by a little old man from Florida who never drove it over 20,000 miles an hour, and it's only got 900,000 miles on it."
