Imagine a 21st-century AU of The Mummy. Rick is the adopted son of Evelyn's favorite professor from her college days, but they only meet when Evy is invited to her house to discuss Hamunaptra (Evie is already a librarian but wants to gain experience in archaeology with that professor). Meanwhile, Jonathan read their deceased parents' documents and finds a mysterious letter mentioning the Medjai. Ardeth is a poet who, obviously, keeps his life as a medjai a secret and goes to investigate when the group (Evelyn, the professor, Rick, and Jonathan) find Hamunaptra.

Jonathan felt jovial again. Perhaps this is the feeling you get when you and your friends confront a mummy and manage to rescue your sister from a sacrifice. In any case, he was at the Cairo Museum of Antiquities with his sister and O'Connell and decided to explore the other sections.

It had been weeks since they faced Imhotep, and the museum was finally ready for its reopening. Evelyn would assist the new curator, likely another Medjai, and was the head librarian. Speaking of Medjai...

"You?!" Ardeth Bay asked as soon as Jonathan came down the stairs. The man was standing next to the new exhibit and looked surprised.

"Yes. My sister works here... Evelyn Carnahan, the librarian" Jonathan said shyly. He didn't know why, but he felt his cheeks burning.

"Ah, now I remember," Ardeth approached, smiling. "How are you all? The new curator will be arriving soon." He and Jonathan sat down in the nearest chairs while listening to the librarians' voices nearby.

"We're fine, Evelyn hasn't woken anyone she shouldn't have lately," he joked, "but we were organizing the library section. She's very excited for the reopening and all of it. And you?"

Ardeth observed Jonathan for a while before saying, "I'm fine. My mother was ill last week but has recovered." Carnahan noticed his tired look and spoke in a gentle tone, "I'm glad your mother recovered. You know, Ardeth, if you need help with anything... You can call me or Evelyn and O'Connell."

Bay seemed surprised and smiled broadly. "Thank you, Jonathan. I've been thinking lately about how we met in an unusual way..."

"Oh, yes," Jonathan agreed thoughtfully. "A bloody adventure, chap. With cowboys, mummies... Rick kissing my baby sister on a bloody camel..." He grimaced, and Ardeth's shoulders trembled as the man stifled a laugh.

"Yes... But I'm glad to have met you, Evelyn and O'connell," Ardeth cleared his throat, "especially you. I mean, you always make me relax somehow". This time, it was Jonathan who was surprised and smiled back. The two continued chatting until Evelyn appeared, her eyes sparkling, and O'Connell was right behind her with a big, goofy grin. Jonathan noticed that the four of them made a very chaotic and hilarious group.

Years passed, and from a group, they became a family. Evelyn married Rick, while Ardeth became a great friend of theirs until finally he and Jonathan declared their love for each other. Jonathan began visiting Ardeth's family, spending time with his mother-in-law, and laughing with his father-in-law. Jonathan always caught his boyfriend (and future husband) smiling sweetly at him, and his heart would leap with joy.

He and Evelyn had met the loves of their lives in the most chaotic way possible, but they were happier than ever. The only thing that saddened Jonathan was the fact that their parents never got to meet Ardeth, Rick, and Alex. Jonathan reflected on this as he slept embraced by his beloved. He felt Ardeth kiss his forehead and sigh "I love you" before falling asleep.

headcanons: Ardeth studied literature in college and is excellent at poetry. Jonathan became an author about the adventures of a retired archaeologist who unravels mysteries. Evelyn started helping younger librarians and Egyptologists women to enter the field. Rick helps the orphanage in Cairo with donations and has contact with some of the staff who basically raised him. Alex started wearing glasses when he was 10 years old, like his mom, and has low vision. After TMR, the Medjai and the O'Connells formed an alliance to protect the world. The O'Connells would update the Medjai whenever something strange happened, and the same would happen if Ardeth and the others noticed anything.

Jonathan doesn't know how it started, but he and Ardeth quickly became close on the journey to Ahm Shere. Small talk soon turned into longer, more personal conversations, with each revealing their past and desires for the future. He had dated other people before, but there was an intimacy between him and Ardeth that had never happened in his past experiences. Even before their first kiss, after the battle against the Scorpion King, the two were closer than ever.

In the first night of that travel, while his sister chatted with her husband, Jonathan fell asleep with his head resting on the medjai's shoulder. He felt embarrassed afterward, but Ardeth said there was no problem at all, and soon the two were sleeping cuddled together. They grew accustomed to each other's warmth and voice. Even Ardeth's bird, Horus, quickly took a liking to Jonathan (to everyone's relief, the bird was alive and managed to hide in the dirigible after the final battle).

Izzy even believed there were two couples on the dirigible, which caused Jonathan and Ardeth to blush. So they started dating and quickly got married in the Medjai camp. They had already known each other 9 years ago, so why wait? Of course, Jonathan's family moved to Cairo so that he could live with his husband and still be close to his little sister and the others. And the intimacy they shared did not diminish over time, it only grew stronger. .

Evelyn spent many years hearing from potential love interests that her dreams were foolish until she met a certain American who actually listened to and respected her thoughts. Rick O'Connell followed her lead, attentively listening to her lectures on Egyptology, and even managed to get her an archaeological kit ("borrowed" one). Evelyn, in turn, listened to his stories about his time in the orphanage and his fears.

And their attention was tinged with intimacy. So, when they returned from Hamunaptra, the two began to share each other's daily lives. They walk with his hand holding hers, keep each other company when one of them is having nightmares or in any other moments, and cuddle in the moonlight. There was not only physical intimacy between lovers, but also emotional intimacy that neither of them had ever experienced.

Years passed and their intimacy continued to grow, especially after Evie's temporary death. Sometimes the two would simply lie embraced in bed. Just listening to the heartbeat of their beloved, happy that they are alive. Other times, Rick would wake up from a nightmare, but his body would automatically relax upon feeling Evelyn's touch on his forehead. Their souls will remain connected forever.
