Cathy really sees Steed suffer a lot. And at this point in the story, she knows why he’s doing what he’s doing. She knows that he’s going through all this to catch the traitors.

‘The Nutshell’
31/? Patrick Macnee as John Steed in The Avengers
As I fell ill during the making of this set and costumes and so was generally directing my daughter and Lulu Jones on what to paint where 😅 and bossing the cast on their costumes. It all came out very pretty though AND most importantly our young cast were utterly, utterly incredible. A 400 year old play delivered with verve and great humour. Hats off once again to our visionary artistic director Noel Jones 😘😘
I just love this moment....Look at Cathy’s expression as she corpses in this delightful sequence at the end of The Nutshell where Steed is explaining that there is no microfilm of “Big Ben”. Instead of sticking to the script as follows:
Steed: “The rest are pictures of you my dear, April in Corfu, I believe”
Cathy: “Not those ones, they were terrible”
He cheekily inserts his own humorous re-write and makes her corpse by saying:
Steed: “I think the rest were of you my dear, astride a donkey on the beach at Bognor Regis”
He had it all planned, you can see it in his face. And the wide shot production stills reveal the laughter it caused, post rolling.
This is why I love these video-ed episodes. You get an insight into what was really happening on set, rather than it getting cut, as it would have on film.
Cathy’s having difficulty keeping it together.
I’m pretty positive Patrick ad-libbed the line about Cathy riding a donkey down the beach, given Honor Blackman’s reaction.
