Recommendation : The Plot Whisperer by Martha Alderson
I got my hands on a fantastic book on plot creation at the bookstore today: The Plot Whisperer. What's fascinating about this book is that the author approaches plot creation from two different sides - the left brained writer and the right brained writer.
(More about left brain verses right brain.)
Left brained writers generally consider themselves to be good at plots. They are analytical, plan the plot extensively, and enjoy figuring out details. They're usually good at action scenes. They are linear, and don't like to start their books until they know all the details. The difficulties they generally face usually pertain to characters and emotions. They may lose sight of characters while working on plot.
Right brained writers usually consider themselves to be great at characters. They interject emotion into their writing, and are more concerned with how their characters are expressing themselves and how they are reacting emotionally to the situation, rather on the details of the plot itself. They generally don't plan ahead, and don't like to. They often fall prey to weak plots and lack of structure.
This book focuses on balancing left brain strengths with right brain strengths to craft a plot that is structured, while also creating characters that live and breathe.
As a left brained person who is very linear, this book is a big help to me so far, and I'm only into chapter three! It's a fascinating look at not only plots and how they've been crafted for thousands of years, but also myself as a writer looks at my plot, and how I can improve.
Fascinating book with great lessons and examples. For those looking for help crafting plots, check this book out!
