INTERVIEW WITH THE PSYCHED
The Psyched: Totally psyched. Literally!
Who are you?
We are the Psyched, from Brooklyn, NY. Paul Weil on drums and vocals, Anthony Macbain on guitar and vocals, and Jess Ludwicki on bass. Anthony also plays synth on our album.
Who are you wearing?
The Psyched is a gang of brothers and sisters. You want in, you gotta believe in rock-and-roll. Everyone in the gang gets a denim vest with a unique character on the back of it that represents your spirit in the gang. Jess wears the Cyclops. She is the Seer. Anthony wears the Warrior whose helmet signifies that he is the defender of the meek. Paul wears the Priest. He bears the weight of the world which is shown in his tears. Each face is one-of-a kind and is handmade by Paul out of puffed leather. The Warrior and the Priest adorn the front and back covers of our debut LP on Black Gladiator/Slovenly Recordings.
Who has the best hair: The Psyched or Tunnel of love?
Bazooka Joe of Black Gladiator Records once said that The Psyched was the only band he ever heard that made him want to grow his hair long. Joe also re-released Tunnel of Love’s classic LP Rockin’ Rollin’ Bitches, so I guess you should ask him.

Best band on Slovenly?
You said it, not us!
What are you so psyched about?
The name Psyched has many connotations—psychedelic, psychotic, psychic. To be psyched means to be excited to be alive in the moment. After playing with several Slovenly label-mates from Europe, we’ve come to realize that "psyched” is not a word used by most folks from across the pond. We like that you can interpret it however you want. Personally, I use the word “psyched” in conversation all the time. I can’t help it. At first, it was worth laughing about it every time one of us would say “I’m totally psyched!” and another one of us would say, “Literally!” Now it's old, but people who don’t know us still think it’s funny. The name was chosen from the lyrics to our theme song, “I’m Psyched”. Everyone needs a theme song.
You can listen along with some dope lyrics here:

WELL, I’M PSYCHED AND IT FEELS SO QUEER
LIFTING MY FINGERS SO YOU DISAPPEAR
JUST TO REAPPEAR PSYCHED
CATCHING YOUR TEARS
WASHING OUR HANDS WHILE OUR ENEMIES LEER
WITH TWO LEFTS AND A RIGHT
LET’S UNDERSTAND PRECEPTS AND PROGENY
A MAN WITH A PLAN HAS GOT MAPS OUT OF SIGHT
RIGHT FROM THE START
CRUMBS IN SMALL HANDS AFTER YOU TOOK THE PART
LET'S MAKE THIS CLEAR
YOU ARE THE REASON THAT I'M STANDING HERE
AND I'M PSYCHED SO LET'S UNDERSTAND
YOU'RE HOLDING OUR HEARTS IN YOUR HANDS
THIS IS A WARNING, THIS IS A VERSE
FOR ALL THE PEOPLE THAT I WANT TO CURSE
AND PRETEND THAT I MIGHT CATCH ALL YOUR TEARS
WASHING OUR HANDS WHILE OUR ENEMIES LEER
WITH TWO LEFTS AND A RIGHT
LET’S UNDERSTAND PRECEPTS AND PROGENY
A MAN WITH A PLAN HAS GOT MAPS OUT OF SIGHT
RIGHT FROM THE START
CRUMBS IN SMALL HANDS AFTER YOU TOOK THE PART
Is there such a thing as too much fuzz?
We do not use any fuzz pedals. Anthony and Jess play matching white Fender Mustang guitars—Anthony goes direct into a Fender DeVille 2 x 12 combo-amp with a built-in overdrive switch. Jess plays through a Kustom head. The vocals go through our Fender PA135 with spring reverb, which was an all in one sound-system used by church bands in the 1970’s. On the album we play a Korg Delta analog synthesizer also from the late 70’s/early 80’s. It sounds insane. We are not gear fetishists though. This stuff all kinda just fell into our laps. We like to keep it real.
Which 60's soul singer would you like to back up?
Sam Cooke is the man. He’s lucky he never heard us cover his song, “Bring It On Home To Me”, or else he’d be doing the twist in his grave right now. We do it with our own spin. Otherwise, it would be Erick B. and Rakim. They're still laying it down.

Are you good boys?
…And a good girl. We take care of business. We have serious jobs and Paul's got kids. We are holding it down and working hard to do what we do. Play rock-and-roll and make art.
What are the three things you would buy in a tool store to freak out the cashier?
When Anthony was a teenager he worked in a hardware store as a cashier. Once he found a guy in aisle five with silver all over his face from huffing cans of spray paint. All kinds of things go down in hardware stores that would freak you out. But to answer your question, let's say, rubber gloves, a plunger, and duct tape.
What is your message for the kids?
Life is short. Do your best. Play rock-and-roll. Play all night long. Talk to your sisters. They're not alone.
