A few days ago I wrote up a description of The Purity, a fear I identified as present in some of TMA’s statements but one that was never described as an actual fear in the podcast. It’s a concept a few friends and I have been considering for a while now. But with the coming political state of the world, or even Pantone’s goddamn “colour of the year”, I think it’s fitting to discuss.
The Purity. Otherwise known as The Dull, the you do not belong here, the Cleansed. It’s a fear of being othered. The sense that you are hated to the point that those around you wish for nothing but your destruction or absolution. You do not know who holds this perspective of you, you just know people do. It’s like the precursor to the slaughter. Not the violence itself but the promise of potential violence. It’s the feeling of knowing you are hated so deeply over factors you do not understand as being wrong.
It’s a fear apparent in all walks of life. We more commonly see it in the marginalised communities like the LGBTQ+ (Particularly for trans folk), in the ASD community (and similar neurological disabilities), in ethnic minorities or in outcast religious sects. What’s notable is that it also appears in those we fear the hatred of. Right wing Americans fearing the destruction of their way of life, anti-vaxer parents worrying their children will experience contrary states of being to what they want due to the preconceived effects of inoculations, people hating on the Jewish religion and culture or on Muslim culture because.. I actually don’t know why? There’s arguments I hear for why people are intolerant towards the former cases but I have no clue why some people just flat out hate Judaism or Muslims. For the latter maybe it’s a terrorism thing? No idea.
I feel with the current direction everything is heading it may be worth adding the Purity into our list of fears to watch out for. No reason to feed the eldritch entities from the realm beside existence that are the encapsulation of our very dreads. Where’s Gertrude Robinson when you need her..
