From our stacks: Design by Charles S. Ricketts for back cover of "The Sphinx" by Oscar Wilde, from The Chap-Book. Volume I. From May 15th to November 1st. A.D. MDCCC XC IV. Chicago: Stone & Kimball, 1894.
The Sphinx and pyramids at Giza, Egypt, circa 1881.
Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 3. 52 - 55 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) :
"While he (Creon) was king, quite a scourge held Thebes in suppression, for Hera sent upon them the Sphinx, whose parents were Ekhidna (Echidna) and Typhon. She had a woman's face, the breast, feet, and tail of a lion, and bird wings. She had learned a riddle from the Mousai (Muses), and now sat on Mount Phikion (Phicium) where she kept challenging the Thebans with it.”
Also y’know that one version where Hera is the mother of Typhon and therefore the grandmother of all monsters? Yeah it’s kinda cute to imagine her raising some of Typhon’s kids and they gladly take part in her villainous schemes.
The Sphinx illness from Ulysses Dies at Dawn is a manifestation of the End and the Corruption (I'm not sure what you could put as picture, maybe just the album cover?)
THE SPHINX SICKNESS FROM UDAD IS A MANIFESTATION OF THE CORRUPTION AND THE END!
What Fablehaven/Dragonwatch betrayal was the most shocking? (SPOILERS)
