Like everyone else, I am absolutely in love with that Fia quote recently from NADDPOD:
"She had long silver hair, that sometimes I would braid, because she didn’t know how to braid her own hair- how funny is that! Sometimes I wondered, do you want me to braid your hair, is that why you never learned?"
And it just reminds me of this poem:

This turned out super long bc idk how to be concise, so TLDR; once as a teen I was told that Jane Eyre was not a "Strong Female Character", and I'm just ranting about it now.
I've never been good at arguing a point, and tbh have never liked doing so, either, especially when I was a teenager. I've always been more likely to agree with someone, or at least, avoid disagreeing with them– whether or not the subject would have been worth arguing over, to them. I don't think I could tell, when I was younger, and found myself saying stuff like "oh yeah, rainy weather is *terrible*" even though I loved the rain. Looking back now, I can't imagine why I would think that differing opinions on the weather would start an argument, but I digress.
One conversation that I remember in particular bothers me from time to time, because I wish that I had had the words then to express my opinion, because the other person's opinion irritated me to no end, even back then.
I distinctly remember sitting at my friend's kitchen table discussing classic lit with their mom– it was a hot and sunny afternoon in my freshman year of high school. For reasons unknown, that year I reread Jane Eyre about four or five times. So, being in a conversation about classic lit, I brought it up. I think I mentioned something about it being my favorite book at the time.
And what I'm still irritated about to this day, is the fact that this lady immediately says, "Oh, I don't like Jane Eyre. She's just not a Strong Female Character, ya know?"
Granted that isn't the *exact* way that she said it, but I *distinctly* remember her saying the exact words "Strong Female Character". It was very unfortunate that my angry-confusion wasn't able to override my knee-jerk reaction to automatically agree with people, but I was a teenager so it's fine. I'm going to rant about it now, instead.
Let me clarify, that this was a good ten years ago, when "Strong Female Character"(SFC from here on) had just caught on as a buzzword, and plenty of people were mistaking "Strong" for "angry, buff, and snarky" which are all fine things to give a character but far from The Point, of course. And my friend's mom, while good intentioned, always had this preoccupation with being "cool", so she used the buzzword as it was so vastly being misunderstood at that time...
But it basically came down to something along the lines of "Jane should have dropkicked Mr. Rochester, and should never have gone back to him." Which like, I don't *wholely* disagree with that, but people deal with and react to things differently... But when it came to "Jane should have been more like Elizabeth Bennett bc that's a *real* SFC" that really got me bc like,,, they were in two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SITUATIONS, with two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT backgrounds, and personalities, and do you *really* want a cookie cutter Lizzy Bennett for every SFC??? NO!! YOU DONT!!!! THATS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT PEOPLE WANT WHEN THEY ASK FOR SFCs!!!! THE POINT IS HAVING A MULTIDIMENSIONAL DEVELOPED CHARACTER!!!! WHICH JANE EYRE IS!!!!
But what REALLY gets me, is that she was implying within the convo that Jane Eyre was a super weak person with no backbone, etc, and just like,,, weak and worthless, basically?? That's what I was hearing.
I absolutely took this personally bc I was a teen and read this book multiple times for a reason. As an adult, I look back and see that I saw myself in Jane, and saw that you could hold your ground in different ways than directly fighting/arguing with someone, and I took that to heart.
I always thought it was awfully courageous of Jane to stick to her guns and leave Rochester despite the fact that she loved him deeply, and had no where to go, hardly any money, and no connections. I would think that shows a LOT of strength of character. Conviction, determination, perseverance. I read about a woman who stuck to what she thought was right even when she didn't have anyone in her corner. I can't call that weak. She ran away, yes, but it was a terrifying and heartbreaking choice to make for her. How is that weak?
Yes, she married him in the end, but Elizabeth marries Darcy in the end as well, so that's a bit of a moot point if you ask me.
I wish I had asked for details and argued it instead of defensively shutting down and agreeing, because I wish I knew why she thought Jane Eyre was weak. Maybe something about the book made her uncomfortable or hit on an insecurity of hers that she couldn't explain? As a teenager I feel like I absorbed the themes: subdued or kind does not equal weak, running away can actually be the answer, and how precious and important non-romantic relationships are and can be. and they gave me hope.
Sometime soon I should post some of the scenes from Jane Eyre that really made me crazy as a teen bc I recently realized how deeply I built them into myself when I watched part of the 80s TV series and was blindsided by the fact that some of them weren't included. In my head I considered them to be extremely important, but I guess maybe not to other people??
sometimes i think a lot abt how ref aubrey is the one to always tie jb’s wrist gauntlets for him

switching to a skeleton draft has made me work so much faster! technically i have a bit of leeway for tomorrow, which i might use as i’ve started an online course and apped to an rp (goodbye stress-free life!), but all in all i’m definitely on track to finish early! which means afterwards i’ll have to start properly writing,,,, yikes. anyway, this excerpt is from much later, when they’re preparing to infiltrate the villain’s ball. ft. kit being gloriously gnc & cute, and bea’s inability to process positive emotions.
