a toffolis + little!mack drabble, cat's POV ambiguous setting, imagine it after a tough game basically (re: blues game 03/26 i guess? that post-game mack interview was bruuutal)

bc i don't shut up, additional notes are in the reblogs this time (trying smth new). no cws afaik, mack's just sad and tired and crying a lot, but lmk if you want anything to be put here just in case

Cat expected to see Mack's shoes in front of the door, lined up neatly next to Ty's. Especially after the past few games they had—this off-day was needed for them to rest and recuperate.

What she doesn't expect to see is Ty sitting on the couch, hunched over a lump of mass that one can only presume is Mack. He has a fluffy white throw blanket on his entire body and covering his head, one of the really soft ones they take out when it's movie night or storytime or anything of the sort. From what Cat can see, Mack is shivering hard, blanket shaking with him as he crawls in closer to Tyler's side, a strikingly loud sob escaping his mouth every few seconds. He's trying to make himself as small as possible and oh– oh. Cat gets it now.

She sets her keys down on the dining table, the noise causing Tyler to look up and over at her with a soft smile. "Didn't hear you come in, babe," he says. Macklin makes a noise underneath him, a wet, questioning whimper through his tears, to which Tyler quickly shushes him, starts stroking his back again in a sweet rhythm to calm him down.

"Is he…?"

"Yeah. We have our baby right now, isn't that right, Macky?" Cat peeks over the couch to see Mack nodding underneath the blankets at Ty's question. If she heard correctly, she thinks she heard Mack parrot "baby" as the answer, small voice croaking around the vowel.

Cat's chest tightens as the thought of her not-baby being so aware of himself, and she frowns at the sound of Mack's voice. Coupled with the way he looks, the obvious exhaustion surrounding Mack has her eyebrows furrowing with concern. "Why's he shaking so much?"

It seems like Tyler's reading her mind, and she's never been more thankful to have married such an understanding man. "Just crying it all out. We're working on trying to let ourselves go." Ty frowns, and Cat knows it's because the little baby in his arms is trying to be so quiet, trembling from the efforts of keeping his mouth shut. "Mack, don't you wanna say hi to Catcat?"

She watches as the said boy pauses, hears his breath catch on a choking cry, and walks closer to the back of the couch as he slowly turns to his right so he can look at her from where he's lying down. His eyes are teary still and bloodshot, philtrum shiny with snot and tears as he snuffles, teeth grimacing in an effort to both appear happy and hold his cries back all at once. Her hand peeks up out of her sweater to wave at him, natural sweater paws hopefully posing her as non-threatening. Macklin wipes his tears away with the back of his hand, waves a small "Hi" back, and she smiles at his efforts to try, even though he's not looking directly at her and instead at something else. Fatigue quickly takes over after he stays up for a bit too long, and he slumps back into Ty's lap, rubbing his eyes all over Tyler's shorts like the harder her rubs, the faster his tears will go away.

Cat's heart hurts. Not just at how small Macklin can make himself look next to her ever-so-kind husband, but at how much Mack is trying to stop and shut himself up. She's again so, so thankful for her Ty and the way he's silently asking Macklin to stop holding everything in. Sometimes actions speak louder than words for Macklin, especially when he's little—the Toffolis have definitely had practice with a little Mack that prefers present touch than empty praises.

Tyler pats the back of Mack's head, hoping it'll do their little some good to focus on something constant, and Cat makes quick work of unpacking all of her stuff before settling down on Macklin's other side, leaning her head on his back. She caresses his back, feels the way he slowly relaxes underneath her and starts laying his full, free body weight on Tyler's lap. Ty feels it too, if the look he gives Cat is anything to go by. They all lay on the couch just like that, with Ty eventually putting a random hockey game on the TV, until Macklin falls asleep safe in their arms.

Cat: You know what I haven't played in a while? Spin the bottle.

Toff: Why would we play spin the bottle? We're married, we can just kiss whenever we want.

Cat: I don't know. I always used to like it. Maybe tomorrow, when Will and Mack come over for dinner.

Toff: Don't tell me I have to worry about losing you to a teenager.

Cat: What? No. Ew. I don't want to kiss either of them.

okay but why did u have to describe it that way anon now IM sad FUCK. inconsolable little mack halfway across the world from his safe people T_T (sidenote: love the use of catcat by everyone lately #yes #thatsmysharkmama)

god i think BOTH are great ideas...so here are some thoughts about them both because im ILL

catcat and toff on the phone:

if i've done my research correctly, timezone difference is 8 hours between milano cortina + california in the winter, so lets sayyy 12am italy = 8 am cali

so just imagine cat and toff receiving a call right as they've starting eating brunch or something (misa is off somewhere idk) and the phone rings

to their surprise, it's MACK. that's not right, mack's supposed to be asleep right now, it’s 2am, both cat and toff sent him texts after the loss, but mostly left him alone because they wanted to make sure he had his space...it's been a few days, sure, but they're not going to just hound mack after something as devastating as this. and so when the id lights up on toff's phone, he's picking it up right away.

the toffolis are met with small little whimpers and a quiet cry for "mama" and "papa" a few seconds after they ask him how he’s doing and it breaks their hearts. they can tell by the echo that he's done gone to the stairwell or the lobby or something in the dead of night, truly alone and scared and wanting his caregivers so bad and not wanting to let anyone see this side of him

there's a very audible pout in cat's voice as she asks, cautiously, how mack's feeling, heart hammering as she hears him mumble around his sleeve and talk no louder than a decibel. he’s babbling, they can both hear it, and tyler reminds him that it’s not his fault and how hard he worked and how much time he has left to win canada a gold because he’s so , so young in all the senses and how they’ll see him soon, they swear it. macklin doesn’t really believe but he’s gotta at least listen to mama and papa because they must know what they’re talking about and he responds to their comforts with quiet and quick “yes”es that seem more autopilot that anything, but it means mack's listening and that's really all they can ask for right now

only words mack really materializes in the conversation are “miss you” and “wanna be home” and “sorry” and his voice cracks on each one. of course, the toffolis tell him he’s got nothing to worry about and that they’re so, so proud of him and all the work he did for team canada ❤️

they remind him of his lovey that they bought him and packed in his bag at the bottom and how he can always use it when he’s feeling so itty bitty and lonely while he’s so far away,, and that they’re waiting for him when he gets back to have some good family time, and stella’s so proud of her big brother too that she can’t wait for him to show off his shiny new medal, no matter the color. he’s not only the people’s champion…he’s their champion, and is coming home one despite what everyone’s been saying about him or the team 🔆

team canada familyisms

(note: im not familiar with tooo many of the team canada guys. crosby fs (like duh?) mcdavid mackinnon makar nick suzuki seth jarvis tom wilson marchand and marner are who i know the most about, and even them my knowledge is baseline/borderline fanfic-y at best. please bear with me and i implore you to read my pinned intro again DONT KILL ME)

despite my lack of knowledge of team canada, the thought of team canada looking after a little!mack who slipped due to the stress and disappointment and heavy heavy emotions has me so :( i was very attached to team canada familyisms during/after the olympics

like of course everyone in the locker room is shaken up by the loss but mack’s the youngest, their baby, beats out seth jarvis by four years and they're a little wary of what it might mean for celly to have a loss like this especially considering how much of their performance was him

and so when his heads hanging low for far too long and he’s just not moving (because he’s starting to slip~~ and trying to get himself together so he doesn't do that in front of his teammates) even though his gear’s like, half off, everyone's scrambling to find the captains/alternate captains or more ready teammates that can handle this properly and not just with a stiff pat on the head or smth

and because i love a good sidcros-mack moment, even though sidney was out he’s still in the locker room and he comes over and asks if mack’s okay. mack’s not responding because he just can’t, and if he does, it’s going to tell sidcros that he’s weird and he shouldn’t have been allowed on this team and—

and sidcros’ hand is on his back. mcdavid’s on the other. they breathe with him for a bit as the rustling of the locker room slows down, all eyes lurking at or hovering over the rookie.

when his pace is finally, finally back to normal, coming down from the hyperventilating, he throws himself onto sidcros like a sticky toddler and just rubs his face on sidney’s coat, hiding away from everyone else, so so hyperaware of their eyes on him and he doesn’t want to be little but he is

little!macky trying to suppress his giggles when he feels marchand's scattered poking at his side, burrows further into sidney's hold and squirming around as sid holds him, whispers close to mack that he did so well, was such a good teammate and team player and that sid wouldn’t have wanted to play with anyone else—rest of the room joining sid in their mack praises

mack who’s face is beaming where he’s hiding in sid’s coat, nodding along to show that he’s listening because he needs his quiet time in sid’s arms but it’s not sad quiet time like earlier, just contemplative and warm and mack feeling so so loved by the physical manifestations of the country he fought so dearly for :” 🍁

this took me so long because i had a tough time manifesting team canada familyisms even tho i do have some affinity in my heart for them,, but i hope this answered your question anon :P

it’s not as deep-cut and devastating as i was thinking for a big big little!mack olympics drop (the inconsoleable line from cellydada still got me and macky’s quite consolable in the prompts above (but not Truly okay yet—i don’t think that happened until he got back to san jose and Then some)), because i kinda just rolled along with your ideas and that meant seeing toffolis/teamcanada family comfort happiness as soon as possible :”!! happy little!macky happy me!! will probably expand on post-olympic game mack sometime in the future mayb…huhu

thinking about the toffoli’s adopting all the sjs littles once again and thinking sooo deeply and emotionally about misa and mackie being toffcat’s littlest babies 🥺

i can picture (with help and adoration to ur post about mis and stella, and your fic with willmack and the puppies) mis and mack being the ones who struggle the most with their physical size not matching with their brain’s perception of themselves when they’re little

like what do you mean they’re not little enough for mama cat to just pick them right up and rock them around when they’re sleepy… this makes them soooo sad!! i feel like toff would really make an effort into making sure they both feel small and safe and tiny when they’re in headspace, like those are his babies and he’ll be damned if they’re not able to feel like it

cue cat waking up at 6am to toff building a rocker on the porch big enough to sit with them on his lap, or pulling extra weight at the gym so he can carry them to bed sometimes… just sweet papa toff who is made to love these babies!!!

i just exploded into a million fucking pieces what do you mean what do you MEAN misamack being so tiny tiny but too big for mama im going to claw my eyes out oh my GOSHHH T_T i love thinking about tiny misamack as just the baby duo ohmfgggg

i know i've written a bit about how little!mack definitely feels too big for his body as seen in my puppies l!wm fic, but oh gosh babymisa would definitely struggle the same way, especially when hanging out with stella so much and cat "hi baby!"-ing stella and mis thinking it was for him but no,, mama's talking to her real baby and not misa who's too big for himself, let alone mama cat :(

misamack would both whine so fucking hard about it T_T cat's definitely Strong (re: catsharkie clip from her instagram post where she carries them) but probably not strong enough to both pick them up And rock them back n forth in one go, and they hate that they can't comfortably bury themselves into her arms no matter how much they try, limbs too gangly against her and that's not fair, she's their mama n she's supposed to carry them!!

to me, misa's definitely more of that quieter disappointment and doesn't exactly bawl about it, but you can tell he's sad because he retreats so far into himself that he basically puts himself in the corner for being Too Big T_T and it breaks cat's heart when she tries n tries to get misa to look at her and he just won't because he doesn't think he's worth it

cat using her words on mis and gently reminding him that he'll always be mama's littlest boy, it's not baby's fault that mama can't carry him right now, but she'll make the effort to, she promises

and of course kids n their selective hearing,, misa turning to her n just "little?" "yes honey, my littlest boy ever"

misa climbs into her lap and buries his face in her neck and sure his legs are sticking out weirdly and his arms wrap around her entire body and he can feel his back, but it's his mama hugging him and giving him more warmth that he knows what to do with and in that moment he feels just so at peace and calm and small knowing that mama thinks he's little, and if mama says so, misa thinks so too!

as opposed to mack who would probably tear up immediately once she says she cant. he's very frustrated and sad about it but he doesn't want her to think it's because of her and could never blame his mama for something that's so clearly his problem, so he storms off n slams the door to the guest room

cat waits to see if he's either going to sit quietly to calm himself down or start throwing things, hears a loud thud, and decides yeah, lemme go up there and make sure he doesn't hurt himself or anything around him

cue cat opening the door to find mack buried underneath blankets and shivering and trying to wrap them around himself and cat tries calling his name and is met with a mumbled "go 'way" and a quieter "...'m sorry" and his voice cracks when he apologizes because he hates making mama worried about him but he hates being too big for mama even More right now,, doesn't want to be in a bad mood but he doesn't know what to do

cat taking a seat on the bed and sitting with him and asking him yes/no questions that she gives him all the time in the world to answer, and eventually macky coming out of his blanket-shell (the blanket's still on him of course) and moving his head into her lap, letting her gently stroke his hair as she keeps asking him questions and he comes down from his big-emotion almost-tantrum

her arm reaching out to pull him closer and into a ball and into her lap and she just "see macky? mama can hold you just fine like this. naptime, baby." but mack's already out like a light

i love LOVE how you mention toffs efforts to make them feel small like oh my gosh toff would do that wouldn't he. "those are his babies and he’ll be damned if they’re not able to feel like it." like that's papa T_T

i don't think he'd even tell the baby sharks that he's doing so because he wants to surprise them with it—presenting it nonchalantly to them like he didn't work day and night to build it just for them to be comfortable

im actually crying at cat waking up to the sounds of drills and saws and hammers nailing in the seat part of the rocker, testing the swing to see if it's got a good range of motion

cat bringing her blanket out to the porch, eyes still bleary and barely-awake and just resting on the seat lying sideways and sleeping again as he builds around her so she's there while he works on it and that's how they spend the next couple of mornings together

toff building a little compartment in the back of the rocking swing seat to keep blankets and pillows and stuffies so they're easy-access whenever they need it, especially when the littles start getting emotional when they're being rocked (which is often)

cat's got littles on her lap fast asleep and while she loves watching the sun set with them, her legs are getting numb, and she quietly asks toff to lift them to the couch/their comfy mat on the ground of the living room/the bed, and he flexes a little to show how much work he's been putting it before lifting them up easy, first misa to his room where he tucks him in with his blanket, kisses mis' hand before coming back out to get macky n place him on the couch, and macky subconsciously clinging onto toff so tight that toff has no choice but to join him on the couch as well

cat regaining feeling in her legs and going back into the house to see toff hanging half-off the edge of the couch, leg and arm practically caressing the ground, mack on his arm facing the couch and mouth parted snoring softly and she snaps a pic as she goes back to her room and catches some much needed rest there too <3

poor toff subject to a crick in his neck when he wakes up but he looks over to mack who's face is so peaceful and somehow it's all alright and worth it.

cat puts in some extra time in the gym too not to fret! both cat and toff working out together and increasing their weights until cat can carry like. half a misa. and toff can carry a full misa. together they can carry one n a half misamisas!!! cat's gonna work her way up, trust me on this she told me just yesterday.

this song im listening to on loop is making me feeling all sorts of things and unfortunately its bleeding into how im answering my asks which means you get sad sad hurt n then some comfort because of course. that's what age regression is all about!! the misamack tragedy of being so oversized. oh god they're. they're-

Like, imagine baby Mack training with Sid in the off season and he isn’t regressed, but he is in the edge of it and doesn't wanna tell Sid (because he is stubborn!) but Sid, oh Sid, he knows and can see the signs of baby Mack coming to the surface. Mack won't look him in the eye and Sid just has to get to his eye level, like in the GIF 😭😭 And Mack didn’t want to tell him, because he thought Sid wouldn’t want to hang out anymore and he would call Toff to pick him up and now he has ruined it! Ahhhh, I have so many thoughts about baby Mack with caregiver Toff and his beloved uncle/pseudo mama Sid, I just know they (Toff, Sid and Cat, I cannot forget Cat!☝️) would co-parent my baby shark so well! ❤️‍🩹

im sobbing so hard i have a love-hate relationship with when a little hides the fact that they're regressed because its like nooo don't do that it'll hurt you but. but when their cg takes care of them T_T i love that sid can just tell, just knows that mack is regressing from the way he's sloppily holding his stick and missing more goals than usual and skating a little funny cuz his legs are becoming jelly.

helloooo~~! huhu i love everyone's nicknames for me yeah chomp sticky chompmaster69 (patent pending) this is great. i know ur ask is talkin about mack's bday and it's like two weeks after super duper apologies Bear With Me it's been rough T_T

i know realistically he was in vancouver for his birthday this year (i think? someone check me on that pls and thank you) but in agere dreamworld universe it would be huge if mack was together with the littles/cgs for his birthday wherever :" thoughts below :]]

i think they'd throw him a casual party, nothing too big or loud, maybe a pennant banner saying "happy birthday" and a small cake/cookie cake/cupcake. one (1) normal candle for him to blow out

was thinking the menu is many of mack's good/favorite foods (i do not think that boy has Many of them) and also the chicken celebrini is there as a big silly i just think the name is so cutieful

based on how he spent his birthday with just his family and toff last year for dinner combined with how sensitive i think he is when little, a big surprise party is probably not the best thing for him...i don't think he'd be a fan of all the commotion around him tbh he barely likes talking about himself as is

think he'd be a lot more energetic for his birthday for sure !! i think tend to write him a little calmer n quieter just because i feel like he should have that, but when he hears everyone coming over he's !! sooo excited !! helps set up his own party too, wants to make sure everything goes well cuz mama n papa have worked sooo hard to make it fun for everyone !!!

of course there's Presents for little mack: new ministicks set, 1/7th scale zamboni figure for some hockey related ones, maybe a new pacifier and some more stuffies, and a super duper soft blanket he has on him the rest of the day :"

macky opening them with sooo much precision, making sure to set aside wrapping paper that everyone wrapped up for him oh so carefully!! i think he'd be shyyyy about starting opening his gifts but asks will if he can open them together and that !! makes it a lot easier to start opening them :" cuz then the attentions not all on him but shared :""
