How did you like The Unbrunch?

I enjoyed it! There is part of me that would like to go back, but theater experiences that center around food are a bit tricky for me, as I have celiac disease.

Unbrunch round two

You won’t except a small scaled short run “show” would go through iterations, but there are! New things / scenes and a surprising cast. I enjoyed it fully. Three more chances to go down the rabbit hole. Highly recommend!

Did you go to the unbrunch? how was it?

It was VERY good! We bought the tickets in September and had really no idea what to expect. It wasn’t even clear if there was food or not by looking at the site. As the site was updated and the press started to come out, we were both fairly confident that it was going to be cool.

There were food and drinks and they were really tasty. It differed from floor to floor. It was also true promenade! There were times when floors were not opened yet and times where staff members (black mask equivalents) limited audience movement (particularly around the stairs) to ensure the safety of cast and audience members but you were largely free to roam around and see what you wanted. The cast was not only amazing but REALLY well cast. I don’t want to spoil too much so I won’t say much about content but it is everything you could want. It is whimsical as you would expect from Alice in Wonderland. The space was amazing!

If you are a long time McKittrick fan, you will be hard pressed to dislike this production. It is perfect if you have always wanted to see the talent in the hotel doing non-SNM projects. Imagine Mallory Gracenin’s Evelyn Grey character as slightly less gregarious and profane and you have the fun and nonsensical Cheshire Cat. Ginger Kearns was a delightful host as the Mad Hatter keeping the party going throughout the production. Marla Phelan was a perfect Red Queen. When she got upset, her voice reached an almost uncomfortable level of volume and pitch. Zach Martens played a fierce version of the Dormouse and was complimented wonderfully by the March Hare (played by Alec Funiciello who McKittrick fans will recognize from The Lost Supper and McKittrick Follies). Some of my favorite scenes were with Louis Butelli who was a fun surprise. Tony Bordonaro absolutely nailed the White Rabbit. Shane Jensen played a very lurkey character that I am still trying to figure out. I enjoyed the reference to the lesser known charter of Bill the Lizard played by Kelly Bartnik. The character has been reinvented with a new purpose in this production. Keep an eye on Bill, he is trouble!

The only critiques I had were the length and a petty complaint about the masks. The time is advertised as up to 3 ½ hours but most people were moved into a coat check queue or out of the space after about 2 ½ hours. It did run a bit short of what was advertised during the 1st performance. I had a blast and wished it would have been a bit longer. My only other (petty and selfish) complaint was about a mask that was given to the audience at one point to wear. The masks were collected at the end and I would have loved to have kept those masks. They were paper but really cool so I imagine the cost to print was minimal and I wish they would have let audience members have them. I would have even preferred they upped the ticket price by $5 to do so. I did hear other complaints about the ending being abrupt depending on where you ended up when the finale happened. My experience was great but I was in a room with 3 other characters. Some people I went with didn’t really understand they were being ushered out of the building until they hit coat check.

A few tips, there are masks so keep that in mind if you wear glasses. You are only required to wear them for a brief time but can certainly continue to wear them and not feel out of place. They are very on theme. When I was exploring, I just adjusted mine onto the top of my head. That being said, they don’t work great with glasses like most masks so if you wear contacts regularly, you may want to opt to wear them to the performance. If you don’t wear contacts, know they are paper and Kae was able to place her glasses over the mask for the scene we needed to be wearing them for. Worst case scenario, you only wear them for a brief time. There is also a lot of walking around. It is in a brownstone building so there are lots of stairs. Dress accordingly in your footwear. Overall, I would recommend people try to see The Unbrunch. If we lived closer, we would go see it again!

In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a violent world in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud. In this warring city, the movement from love at first sight to the lovers' final union in death seems almost inevitable. And yet, this play set in an extraordinary world has become the quintessential story of young love. In part because of its exquisite language, it is easy to respond as if it were about all young lovers.

So I just started teaching Romeo and Juliet for the umpteenth time to my 9th graders. This year I decided to use an audio version sometimes in class. I found this great one from Folger...and then discovered that Louis Butelli plays the Prince! He’s fantastic too--he captures exactly the right tone. This was a fun surprise today. I love it when my teaching life connects to my McKittrick life.

There are only three performances as of now, so I want to be sure that the people who love and respect the form are able to see it. Tickets and brief information can be found at www.TheUnbrunch.com. The Unbrunch is an immersive experience centered around (you guessed it) BRUNCH! Guests are invited to fall down the Rabbit Hole and enjoy a Saturday brunch in wonderland. The residents show you not only the whimsy, but also the dangers of the dreamscape you've trapped yourself in. The cast is full of experienced immersive alum (Mallory Gracenin, Louis Bartelli, Marla Phelan, Kelly Bartnik, Ginger Kearns, Shane Jensen) as well as a bunch of fresh faces from Broadway and film. I really think this once-a-week experience is going to be a fun one. And for clarity (because it has been brought up by patrons): Brunch and drinks are included in the price of admission. The chef is fantastic and the venue is known for their upscale craft cocktails and quirky dining.

The Unbrunch

So, over a month ago, we purchased tickets to a new immersive show playing in January called The Unbrunch. It is an Alice in Wonderland inspired promenade show put together by Cinereal Productions. The company is co-founded by Sleep No More alumni Billy Bell. The website looked interesting. This is the extent of the information we had when we made reservations.

Since then, we have confirmed there is an actual brunch with food and that there are many familiar faces in the promotional materials released so far. NoPro just published this Q and A with Bell and co-creator Devin Compton and it looks more and more intriguing. We can’t wait to fall down the rabbit hole!
