Winnower
I've been screaming for the last three and a half business days MY WINNOWER IS THAT YOU? IT'S REALLY YOU!!!
#destiny2spoiler #d2spoilers
I have a theory about Destiny 2. It's kinda wild but just hear me out.
So way back in the Season of Dawn, we see our grave. And on top of our grave was a sword. Flash forward to the Final Shape, and we get that sword (Ergo Sum). Initially I thought the timeline we see our grave in was the one where we failed to stop the Witness (or we did and it cost us our lives).
But flash forward to now. I got some dialouge from Bael where he says he sees us dead at his hands, so why does our tomb remain empty? Combine this with the Seer shell lore where XI says because we make our own fate, our tomb will always remain empty.
Add to this: The Shattered Cycle leaks. We were supposed to bind ourselves to III and become the fated Weapon. But we go "nu uh" and bind it to the Traveler instead, which is why the Traveler would start to heal.
So here's my theory: The timeline where we see us in our tomb is the one where we decided to bind III to ourselves and fight the Winnower that way. We have the sword, our tomb gets mentioned a LOT all of a sudden. And who knows what binding would've looked like/what it would've done to us had we gone through it? Also to consider, we are the god slaying killing machine, but the Winnower would be like nothing we ever faced before.
Look, I was willing to give the Veil a shot. I was. I was willing to let Bungie cook. But they made the Veil the Travelers opposite, and I couldn't figure out why I didn't like that. Until a random ass reddit comment and it clicked.
The visual storytelling between the Pyramids and The Traveler is such a beautiful way of portraying two opposing forces without explicitly saying what those forces represent. It's all in their design.
Angular/Spherical
Many/One
Black/White
They have "We are opposites" written on their forehead and the Veil kind of fucked it up.
While I'm on the subject, I've been revisiting my favorite lore book "Unveiling" and MAN, that shit was awesome.
I really really really liked when the overarching conflict was about two Gods giving themselves physical form in the universe to win a cosmic argument on whether the conplexity of life made it worth living. I also really liked its interpretation of the Vex: the manifestation of the perfect pattern. Microorganisms that always came out on top before a new rule were forced upon the game. And yeah, i get it, "Unveiling had no reason to be truthful. The Witness had every reason to lie to us to make us fight each other. Untrustworthy narrator." Blah blah blah.
But, I think it would've been way cooler and scarier if it wasn't lying. It would show that The Winnower truly believes what it's saying. It's simply acting in its nature. It doesn't even know if it's 100% correct, but chooses to follow its path anyway.
This part altered my brain chemistry fundamentally. I am NOT normal about this section and I never will be.
Ok. I'm done. You can tear me a new one or pick my apart. You can tell me the new story is better in every conceivable way. But the Unveiling lorebook was P E A K to me
lore tab from the nacre exotic ship
apparently, this dialogue is the winnower itself speaking to our guardian. i have rarely seen people talk about this, and i think it’s very interesting.
the differences between the witness and the winnower here, as well as how it addresses us in such a familiar manner, are especially interesting in my opinion.
What if the Witness needs Disciples to handle the dirty job in its crusade because it can't actually cause that much harm?
What if it is a knife but not a weapon?
What if its real form is one of those knives meant to carve and adjust the little details on a piece of art?
What if its attempt to bring perfection to the universe could be achieved with a gentler and more forgiving demeanor, one not so destructive and demanding as the one it proposes?
What if its purpose is still related to creation and self-expression but it convinced itself to be a blade to inflict pain because it never gave itself another chance at it and now whatever talent it possesses is forever tainted and twisted and it doomed its own happiness in this way?
What if what if what if
