angst 8: “I can’t lose you.” “You already did.”
Sometimes, it just felt inevitable. There was just too much history there for them to not fall together at some point.
Evangeline never thought it would end like this. They’ve stopped yelling at each other hours ago, and now they just sit at her kitchen table in painful silence.
"Evan,” Drew calls softly to get her attention. “You know I never meant to hurt you, right?”
Well, it certainly didn’t feel that way, Evangeline almost says. She doesn’t though, because they- were broken up, or on a break, or separated or whatever they were going to call it. It was a miscommunication and a mistake.
It doesn’t change the fact that there had been another girl, that he hadn’t told her and she’d had to find out herself.
“I know,” Evangeline says instead.
“I can’t lose you,” Drew says, choked up. He knows it’s over as much as she does.
Evangeline closes her eyes. “You already did.”
Wordlessly, she pulls the promise ring off her finger and drops it onto the table.
She doesn’t stay long enough to know if Drew picks it up or not.
