Like I've said before, turning human Sonic characters into mobians under the pretense that it will make them "better" is lazy. There's more than enough to work from with the official human characters, people are just cowards(especially when it comes to Elise and Chris. they're seriously not hard to improve as characters, people). There's a fun opportunity to show how human and mobian characters deal with even simple everyday things differently, but instead people keep homogenizing things.
I mean, I not long ago I saw someone draw an anthro version of a character from Sonic X with the reasoning that humans were long extinct in their personal AU. This is an instance I can get behind because there’s some thought put into it. But more often than not I see it boiled down to “human boring” and/or “for the ship” and it’s just become such a massive pet peeve of mine.
I mean, characters like Elise or Chris aside, there’s plenty of underrated human characters. I find Gerald really compelling and would like to learn more about the kind of person he was. Topaz and her relationship with Rouge was adorable. Sam Speed is a riot and I adore him. A well written Snively makes for an amazing Starscream and his relation with Regina actually managed to hook me. There’s was all that interesting potential in Hope Kintobor. Don’t even get me started on how charming and full of personality the NPCs in Unleashed were. And how many people who haven’t read StC even know about Grimer’s existence (okay he’s technically not human, but still)?
Many of these characters are underdeveloped and/or have flaws, but I can’t help but wonder if they would have more of a following if they hadn’t been human. I see anthro characters who don’t even have established personalities with bigger followings than some of these guys
