🌍 Ok, so “Unpretty.” It’s funny, because in today’s culture it’s super easy to hear this as a church tune. I’ve seen cats approach this with a CCM/Praise & Worship vibe. However, it’s so NOT THAT. When I first got this gig and understood I’d be in charge as Music Director, this tune caught my attention most. I knew most cats would wanna be lazy and just play it how it would be familiar. Of course, Mally & MC being students of the game knew exactly how to approach this tune. & with the help of our friend @shago_elizondo on acoustic guitar giving it that folk flavor that we needed, it made this tune very special to play live. We all as a band found something to believe in, that kept us home in the pocket unselfishly in order to paint a beautiful picture. ... However at first... what was wrong with the musical intro according to Chilli and how did it end up being the perfect segway to a smash hit on tour?? ... . Here is a band room recording mixed by @vjmungo as we prepared for the #iLoveThe90sTour. I as well as my team were concerned about having a proper mix, regardless of our backline limitations. As well as vibe, groove and spacing, so that the song tells a story. But what were some of the other obstacles that we faced preparing for this monster of a tour??? And how did we approach programming and mixing so that even though we’re rehearsing, it sounds like we’re recording??? . 🌍 Ok. So here is “It’s Sunny.” From TLC’s latest self titled album, TLC. This tune is interesting. First off, look at this pic. U can feel the swag and energy coming off the photo. However, because U look young, wild and free doesn’t mean we have to sound that way. A bunch of crazy unnecessary shots etc, ...NO!!!! “Play the record better than the record!” That is the motto ladies & gents! I went back and forth with MC on how HE wanted to voice this tune on Bass vs how ‘I’ needed it to feel. He wanted to add his flavor...& I wanted that, ...but I also wanted that 70s feel. I didn’t wanna compromise anything! & so, because MC and Mally are such students of the game, we were able to capture that EWF thang, while also making it our own. The feel is there...authentic, yet the tune doesn’t sound dated. NOW, ...how did we achieve this? How is it that as a young band, do U find things in the music to believe in? To die daily to what you THINK you WANNA play for the better good of the unit... vs what the tune is saying and what the tune REALLY needs!!! One band, one sound right?? .
