The Other Side
Sometimes I like to
I& too like to
I& think Tumblr partially ate your ask
I am putting The Other Side on the back burner for a minute. I need to get this transcript project done.
I am by ear, by hand, re-transcribing the whole movie. I have a background in sound work, so I'm able to isolate and enhance specific audio clips for better clarity. I am also using the YouTube captions as a basis, but I've noticed multiple errors in it already, so I'm going to give this my best shot. I'm also paying close attention to detail regarding speech mannerisms.
It's been about three-ish hours and I've made it 20 minutes into the movie.
Wish me luck. This is gonna take a damn long time but it will be worth it, I think. I'll have this available in the master reference as a document with open annotation at some point in the coming weeks... if I don't go crazy first. /j
Oh, man. I've been thinking about how I'm going to set up Simon's starship for The Other Side (my fix-it with consequences fic in progress... I'm sending him into space and made him an ex-raiding pilot for Eden!):
Dude would have a secret whiskey compartment hidden behind a panel somewhere
Dirty laundry in the bed cubby because on Eden they're clean freaks, and he can let loose in here
Scrap cloth, wires, various tiny little hoard items he's collected over the years
Being alone in a ship feels more like home than being on a station because there's no people to worry about
He puts the ship on autopilot to snooze. That's like getting out of the driver's seat in a self-driving car that may-or-may-not decide to crash or hit someone. He's a reckless pilot. And a drunk pilot.
He pulls faces in the cockpit glass when things get too boring for too long
He's got that old rock n' roll shit on magtapes in the cockpit dash. Simon would listen to stuff like Foxy Shazam and you can't tell me he wouldn't. Dude loves corny songs about love and hope. He's a daydreamer and a yearner all by himself out there
Hums and mouths the lyrics like a fucking idiot because no one's watching
Spends time charting the stars on a map with a charcoal stick, because he'll document as many as he can before they wink out, just so he can remember where they once were. He has many re-pressed papers dedicated to star locations; many of them years old, full of entire constellations that aren't visible anymore
Has a dedicated hanger for his knife sheath by his bed cubby. It sits there on the wall like a dream catcher
Flips between all those stages of grief repeatedly and spends a lot of time with the ship on autopilot being a lump in the bed
Tries to be an MRE "chef" in the back cabin using the hot engine as a little stove
The ship runs on hypersensitive solar (I'm sci-fi bullshitting rn) because they're still able to use the ghost light, but it's quickly running out, and space travel is going to cease if they don't figure out fuel and soon.
Simon thinks about not being able to fly anymore, a lot
God, I'm so excited to free up my time to get this started for you guys. This is just like, A FRAGMENT of the notes I have ready for this.
Doing early plotting. I've made it to half-way through chapter two at the time of posting. It's been... five hours (?) of on-and-off writing tonight. I am, indeed, painstakingly addressing everything that happened to Simon's body, and then we get to watch him struggle to live normally for a little while before they ship him out to the asscrack of space.
Each square contains text condensed down to literal pixel sizes btw. So far, I've had to research:
All that medical bullshit
Address exactly what kind of MREs would be available in a no-planets scenario and then
Design the food while making it nutritionally plausible
Design the inside of the tow ship while making it plausible
Design the room appliances
Figure out how they would wash clothes / shower using actual Royal Navy Submariner interviews and NASA articles
Apply all of Simon's injuries into long-lasting medical conditions plausibly (I am NOT sci-fi healing him)
Addressing the TBI and cognitive impairments using a shit ton of academic papers (I am NOT being surface-level about this in any manner)
Addressing Simon's potential schizophrenia/trauma-induced psychosis after seeing the God, and then going down an entire rabbit hole on how the COI would even begin to address it
Keeping track of ALL the hole placements in Simon's sweater/clothes and what got destroyed
Having to from-scratch Ava's rough couple-of-days timeline between Simon going missing and Simon re-appearing
Inserting David and Jack into the picture because these guys get sidelined too much, which means FROM-SCRATCH-ING their entire characters based off of transcript lines
This will be the culmination of all my lore posts.
All My Iron Lung Playlists
Putting all these in a post in case I need to mass-reference them for something. Feel free to peruse!
LISTEN IN ORDER :: An Iron Lung fan work playlist, ft. ambient tracks and stuff Simon would listen to while cruising in space. <- For The Other Side.
Ready to feel miserable about this guy? <- Main General Writing Playlist
An ambient playlist for my Simon!Blood AU that matches the energy of the original OST. <- For Terminal Lucidity
The "Michael and Simon getting into serious fucking trouble as space raiders together" crack playlist. <- Not meant to be taken too seriously but I just can't stop thinking about Michael listening to some bullshit poetic depression-rap music and Simon wanting to KHS from the cringe the whole time. /j
Writing progress on The Other Side! So far, I've achieved:
Converting two full scenes into a text-format storyboard so I can properly convert them to novel form.
Connected a storyboard scene to a canon scene smoothly.
Attempted the beginning of chapter 3
Did a FUCK ton of back-hand worldbuilding notes to help propel my story with logic (e.g. figuring out fuel sources, expanding on all the COI stations and giving them plausible purposes, giving Ava a backstory, giving Jack and David personalities with history, naming and designing the Tow Ship, etc.)
Rewrote my Simon age/timeline notes so everything fits better to the movie.
Figured out the reason for shipping Simon's ass back out to 'nam
Expanded on the Council's presence and who they are
That big giant tower of a block is my "Simon's PTSD triggers masterlist" quick reference LMAO
Kurøøøø my favorite void thing /srs
How are you paws at you and bites you

Hi hi hii ! Paws at you and bites you harder
I&'m doing good ! ! ! I& just had lunch which was fried / patty sardines . What about you ? ? ?
