The water drizzled down from the rooftops, stalactites, the statues, and anything else that could catch the condensation from the thick fog.  The pitter-patter of droplets and the clack of footsteps on slate created a beat that turned every uttered note, sound or syllable, into an eternal acapella, a choir singing hymns to its Great Game by existence.

Sereno stood just beyond the plaza that marked the boundary of the half-ruined domain of espionage, a half-huddled ghost clad in a gray gown, a plain gray bowler hat, his chin down, hands clasped, eyes shut.  In and out his breath came, his fingers counting down the prayers on the golden rosary.  Once he was assured of his focus, his goat, he wrapped the gold chain about his gloved fingers and turned about in a quiet rustle of petticoats.

One, two, three.  One, two, three.  He passed the familiar statues, his breath puffing out unseen clouds into his cold hands as he made his way deeper.

In no manner did I make a fool of myself and weep extensively for sheer happiness.
